Gary Becker has been involved in collegiate swimming since 1970. During those nineteen years, he has coached men's and women's swim– ming at all three divisions of the NCAA. Over the years, Gary's philosophy has been one of helping swimmers to improve - both in and out of the \ water. He feels that athletics is a pro– ving ground for physical challenges, as well as personal, psychological, and social challenges. In the past, Gary Becker has coached novice, high school, USS, National and All-American swimmers. In addition to coaching the women's team at USO, Gary runs a highly respected summer competitive swim camp and is the intramural director at the school. Gary is married and has two children-one boy and one girl. He has been a coach for over twenty seasons. Prior to his coaching career, Gary was an outstanding high school and collegiate swimmer and water polo player. Assistant Coach Steve Tucker Assistant Coach Steve Tucker begins his second year as an assistant to Head Coach Gary Becker. Once again, he will assist Coach Becker with the swimmers. A 1971 graduate of Virginia Tech with a Master's Degree from San Diego State, Steve has enjoyed much success coaching at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels. Formerly an age group coach at the Heartland Swim Association, Steve has produced several swimmers who have reached the Top 16 nationally. His team won the local Junior Olympics competition six times. He and his wife, Donna, have two children, Ryan and Brenna. They reside in the San Carlos area of San Diego. Assistant Coach Shane Fitzmaurice Assistant Coach Shane Fitzmaurice begins his first year as an assistant coach with the Toreras. He will have primary responsibility of working with the team's corps of divers. A graduate of San Diego State with a degree in English Lieterature, the New York native has been div– ing competitively for twenty years. He has extensive coaching experience at sports camps, high schools and colleges. His philosophy is to let his charges "work hard but have fun". He is single and lives in the Tierrasanta section of San Diego. Swim Season Outlook The University of San Diego women's swim team is in its eleventh year of competition, the last six as members of NCAA Division I. During these eleven years, Head Coach Gary Becker has produced four Division II All– Americans. Without a doubt, the swim program at USO stresses quality as well as competitiveness. The 1989-1990 edition of the Toreras will, for the most part, be a young and highly talented squad. The team will be composed of 18 swimmers and four divers. Of the 22 members of the team, only three are seniors and two are juniors. The remaining are either sophomores or freshmen. The Toreras appear to be strongest in backstroke and breaststroke events. The backstrokers are led by senior

team captain Shelley Otto. Otto is the USO record holder at both 100 and 200 yards as well as the 50 and 100 freestyle. Sophomore Mary Bergen, last year's outstanding freshman swimmer, returns to anchor the breaststrokers. With a field of seven swimmers-its largest con– tingent ever, the Toreras should be strong in the dis– tance events. Leading the way will be oustanding freshman Susan Torrey. Susan is strong in all freestyle events from 200 yards to 1,650 years. She is also expec– ted to be a factor in the 200 yard butterfly. Freshman Tracy Childs will be the Toreras' stalwart in the medley events. Equally adept at all strokes, she is strongest in the 200 IM event. She will be looked upon to provide the team points in both 200 yard breaststroke and 200 yard backstroke. The diving chores belong to three freshmen and a sophomore. In Abby Curnow, Sarah Mrachek, Deb-
bie Vidosic and sophomore Kristin Parker, the Toreras will be deeper in this event than in recent years. The quartet should be a contributor in each meet. The schedule facing the Toreras is, indeed, a tough one. Included in that schedule are perennial Division I top ten team, USC; Division ll's top '88-'89 team, Cal State Northridge; and last season's number two Divi– sion Ill squad, UC San Diego. Also consistently tough are defending Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference champion Northern Arizona, Pepperdine University, and top Division Ill contender, Pomona-Pitzer. Gary Becker feels that this schedule will help to push his young team to faster times and overall team improvement The Toreras look to make giant strides in '89-'90. With a young, but talented squad, expected important leader– ship from three seniors, and depth at most events, the Toreras look to be competitive in each meet. The '89-'90 season could, indeed, be a season to remember.
