One component of creativity is the ability to break away from conventional approaches when the occasion demands it and to engage in divergent thinking. Divergent thinking is the generation of novel ideas that depart from the norm. In part, this means being able to apply concepts or propositions from one domain to another unrelated domain in a manner that produces a new insight. It also means refusing to be constrained by traditional approaches to a problem.
