A compulsory part of study in year 2 is the completion of a work placement. Whilst on placement, students will gain valuable experiential learning to equip them with the relevant skills needed to secure employment in the health and fitness industry. Modules include: • Nutrition for Health and Exercise • Role of the Personal Trainer • Further Research Methods • Health and Exercise Psychology • Health Perspectives and Physical Activity Interventions • Employability Skills for Exercise, Health and Fitness

Modules include: • Anatomy for Exercise • Health Related Fitness • Introduction to Research Methods • Introduction to Public Health Promotion • Exercise Physiology • Fitness Instruction and Exercise Prescription The second year aims to provide an understanding of the principles of nutrition so that you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to conduct nutritional assessments in order to provide realistic, safe and practical nutritional recommendations for health and exercise. Your critical thinking skills will be developed enabling you to review common dietary practices and their efficacy and safety. The skills required to be a competent personal trainer will be developed with a very hands-on practical approach. You will investigate how to encourage positive behaviour change that can influence health outcomes. Health perspectives and physical activity will be explored looking firstly at the epidemiology of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity whilst a secondary aspect will allow you to critically explore health initiatives at a local YEAR 2

YEAR 1

During the first year you will gain an in-depth understanding of how the musculoskeletal system operates and interacts to enable you to analyse joint movement and muscle activation during exercise. You will develop consultation, practical and evaluative skills in order to effectively health screen and fitness test clients to inform subsequent exercise recommendations. Your knowledge and understanding of the key determinants of health at both an individual level and in the wider societal context will be explored. You will be equipped with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to investigate both the immediate and long-term adaptations of the body in response to different exercise stimuli. You will be introduced to components and principles of exercise and fitness to show how regular exercise and physical activity can be used to improve health and specific fitness parameters. A strong practical focus develops the skills required to plan and deliver gym based exercise programmes. This enables you to plan progressive exercise and physical activity programmes. Your academic writing and research skills will also be enhanced to support and underpin the successful completion of modules in the second year.
