20TH-RANKED USD TOREROS FACE MUST-WIN HOME GAME AGAINST 16TH- RANKED MENLO COLLEGE OAKS

We l come to the University of San Diego Homecoming football game between the USD Torer os and the visiting Menlo College Oaks , This is a must- win s itua tion for both top-20 teams as they try to keep their post-season hopes alive , Menlo College, who has been ranked in the top-20 all season and is currently holding down the 16th spot, comes into Torero Stadium with a 6- 2 record , San Diego, with a 6-2- 1 mark, j ust broke into the top-20 this week for the first time thi s season as they hold down the 20th spo t, Both teams have a l egi timate shot a t the playoffs with a victory today, The NCAA Division III playoff format involves 16 teams , with 4 teams from each region . Right now Menlo i s ranked 4th in the west r egion while the Torer os are right behind at t he 5th spot, The Division III participants fo r the playoffs will be announced on Sunday , November 15th . The Toreros suffered their second defeat of the season last week as they lost t o a very s trong Division II opponent, St. Mary's College . The SMC Gaels scored 20 first quarter points before USD got on the scor eboard with a SO-yard TD pass t o WR Sam McDe rmott f r om OB Brendan Murphy . That was USD ' s only score of t he day as St , Mary's cruised to a 34- 7 victory, The Gae l s totaled 374 yards of offense (254 pass/120 rush) to San Diego's 142 (80 pass/62 ru sh). Murphy struggled at quarterback, finishing jus t S- of-15 for 80 yards , 2 interceptions and 1 TD . Tailback Vir gil Enriquez , who missed half of the season with a knee injury, led USD ' s rushing attack with 33 yards on 11 carries, Defensively , the Toreros received strong performances from the secondary : FS Bryan Day paced the defense with 18 tackles ; SS John Gutsmied l was in on 11 hi t s ; CB Darryl Jackson also had 11 and CB Chris King added 8 tackles, Menlo College, under the direction of head coach Ray Solari, i s 6- 2 on the season and 5-0 against Division III competiti on. Las t week the Oaks defeated Azusa Pacific 43-10 as they totaled 383 yards of offense while limiting the Cougars to a l0wly 99 yards. Earlier in the season Azusa Pacific handed the Toreros one of their two losses , defeating USD 23-18. Against Azusa , QB Jero ld Montano was 18-for- 30 for 258 yards and 2 TD' s (he also had a TD rush on the day) . TE John Covarrubias hauled in 6 of Montano's passes for 107 yards and 1 TD . The Oaks were paced on the ground by TB Doug Pat terson (18 rushes for 40 yards) , Menlo allowed Azusa Pacific only 3 firs t downs in the game, On the season , Montano is 104-of-182 for 1, 283 yards, 9 interceptions and 10 TD's (he is a 4th year seni or) . TE John Covarrubias l eads the t eam with 27 receptions for 341 yards a nd 3 TD ' s . WR Billy Ryan has 19 catches for 299 yards and 2 TD ' s , TB Doug Patterson has rushed 72 times for 260 yards and 3 TD ' s . The defense is led by junior linebacke r Chris Parks (SO tackles) and cornerback Lou Schroeder ( 4 interceptions) . USD leaders for the season include freshman QB Brendan Murphy (44-92 for 642 yards , 6 inte rceptions and 7 TD ' s) ; TE Lionel DeMors t (15 catches for 189 yards and 1 TD); WR Jeff Mansukhani (13 receptions for 245 yards and 2 TD's); TB Todd Jackson (83 carries fo r 394 yards and 3 TD ' s); TB Ty Barksdale (68 rushes for 224 yards and 3 TD ' s) ; FS Bryan Day (78 tackles, S interceptions); ILB Frank Love (67 t ackles, 6½ sacks); SS John Gutsmiedl (65 tackles; 3 inte rceptions) ; CB Darryl Jackson (56 tackles) and ILB Parris So rianello (53 tackles), In last year's game, Menlo defea t ed USD 34- 8.
