Lesson – Scheduling Tasks

M ODIFYING L INKED T ASKS

Discussion

You can still modify your project schedule, even after linking tasks. However, inserting, deleting, and moving linked tasks can have variable effects, depending on the links.

If you insert a task between two linked tasks with a Finish-to-Start relationship (the default), the newly inserted task is linked as well. If you insert a task between two linked tasks with a Start-to-Start , Finish-to-Finish or Start-to-Finish relationship, the newly inserted task is not linked.

If you delete a task that was linked with Finish-to-Start relationships to its predecessor and successor tasks, a new relationship is formed. The former predecessor and successor tasks are linked with a Finish-to-Start relationship after the deletion. If any other type of relationship exists before you delete a task, a link is not maintained after it is deleted.

Move linked tasks anywhere in your project schedule. Microsoft Project attempts to maintain the links when you move a task. If you do not want to maintain the links with the new task sequence, it is probably best to unlink the task prior to moving it and then link it after the move.

NOTE If you do not want a new or moved task to be automatically linked, click the File tab, select Options then Schedule. Under the Schedule options for this project disable the Autolink inserted or moved tasks option.

Procedures

1. Switch to the Gantt Chart view. 2. To insert a new task between linked tasks, select the task above where you want to insert the new task. 3. Insert the new task. 4. To delete a linked task, select the task you want to delete. 5. Delete the new task.
