IN DETAIL The scientific name of lemon is Citrus limon which defines a small evergreen fruit tree belonging to the plant family Rutaceae. BENEFICIAL PROPERTIES Vitamin C: in lemons we find a high percentage of vitamin C, one of the most appreciated vitamins thanks to its antioxidant properties and the capacity to stimulate the immune system. Potassium: lemons are rich in potassium, therefore their juice is excellent for reintegrating the mineral salts lost in sweat. Potassium also carries out other very important functions for the organism. For example it regulates the heartbeat, reduces blood pressure and regulates the pH balance. Limonene: it can be found mostly in the peel and the essential oil; it has insecticidal and degreasing properties. Beta-carotene: it’s a pigment that confers the typical yellowish-orangish colour to vegetables. Along with vitamin C, it carries out a great antioxidant action, preserving the sight as well. Citric acid: it’s an acid substance that acts as an antioxidant, antibacterial and diuretic. MOST POPULAR VARIETIES Sorrento lemon: it boasts the IGP label (guarantee of origin for foods produced in specific areas). Its juice is particularly acid and the peel is rich in essential oils which make it preferable to others for the preparation of liquors. Amalfi lemon: as well as the Sorrento lemon, it boasts the IGP label. Its juice is quite sweet, not too acid and the pulp has few seeds. Zagara bianca lemon: Mostly produced in Sicily, it’s one of the juiciest lemon varieties.
