New York was the home city to this trend where the Big Apple’s bars are mapped and inserted in “apps” that you can download to your mobile, so that you can always find the perfect place to enjoy the best drinks. There is also an incredible app that locates your friends nearby so you can invite them for a round of drinks... these Americans are always eight chess moves ahead! In New York you’re spoilt for choice talking about bars, the happy hour is organised by almost all the bars that propose the clients advantageous promotions on drinks and snacks. Do not expect buffets with snacks, in fact, food is most of the times extra and not included in the price of the drink. There are pubs and bars in every block but if you really want an aperitif you’re never going to forget, you can go to one of the many rooftop bars on the roofs of the buildings and enjoy the extraordinary view of the city. The majority of them opens for the summer season, but many others are also organised to be open during the winter. The view that I prefer is Manhattan, nowadays it’s definitely considered the coolest and most dynamic centre of the city, perfect for the aperitif!

The mainstream cocktail... Manhattan of course, one of the favourite and most sophisticated drinks in the world. Use a tall cocktail glass, put some ice cubes in then pour 5 cl Rye Whisky, 2 cl red Vermouth and lastly a drop of Angostura. Mix it all together with a bar spoon. Use a strainer to pour the cocktail into a previously cooled glass and garnish with a Maraschino cherry.

THE RECIPE ingredients ... and what to nibble on with it: Pistachio lamb nuggets • lamb meat • chopped pistachios • egg white • parsley • breadcrumbs • grated pecorino • butter • salt Cut the lamb meat into small pieces eliminating the fat parts. Cover the nuggets in the egg white then crumb it with the mix of pistachios, parsley, breadcrumbs and pecorino cheese. Melt a knob of butter in a frying pan and cook the nuggets on both sides for a couple of minutes each. Season with salt and pepper to taste before serving.
