study revealed lower prospects of income generation in the light of the regional and local market than we had anticipated, and this consideration had been given following some helpful scepticism by leisure experts at one affiliates’ Executive and in the light of having the overspends mentioned above. I asked the Senior Management team to consider all of this carefully and their view was that we should not proceed with the third building at this stage. The President, Vice President and myself came to the same conclusions as did the Hotel Directors. In the light of this I propose to the EC that it would unfortunately be irresponsible to proceed with the third building.

The area will be provided with services underground in case of a future build.

I propose to write to the unions who made pledges and I believe that with this good will around and we should explore potential other projects/ventures. From my point of view heartfelt thanks to those who pledged and full understanding of the situation of those who were unable to.

New Education Programme.

Myself and the Operations Manager have issued comprehensive new written guidelines on Education Administration and procedures.

Some retraining of staff to operate the contact management system will be required.

I inherited an incomplete education brochure and have completed this. We have printed 1,000 hard copies, and will do most of the promotion electronically. But again this does involve the office upping a gear in terms of back up and administration.

Project 120

Plans for various events to help build the organisation for the future during our 120 th year are in hand and will be discussed further at the next EC.

Future Education.

I have discussed matters with the new Principal of Northern College Yultan Mellor.

New tutors are keen to work with us.

The Education Officer’s job description has been revised and approved by officers.

I am covering this post currently.

I have surveyed the Education and our partnerships again recently. I am convinced that we will need to open up new funding streams in order to boost our provision and open up new partnerships. If Labour get elected at some point there will clearly be more money for adult and trade union education, if they don’t there will be less. Nevertheless, the reality in education funding is that post Brexit as various regional economies recover, as several already are, and as skill shortages are realised and new technologies begin to take off, as is happening in some industries, there will be new opportunities at one end to get funding for unions for skills development and at the other funding for ‘rescuing’ some of the terrible situations many people have been put into. I see a lot of
