8.3

GFTU Investments.

We should bear in mind that potentially if we manage the situation well another advantage to investing our main portfolio in the Quorn site is that the fluctuations of money market investments will be avoided in the future, this provides a more stable environment in which to plan. However, the EC needs to be very aware that even on the best performance figures likely with new hotel, housing and other income from providing services we will remain still around £200,000 short of our required figure to sustain the current levels of activity. This is why I believe that the work proposed above on future education funding is necessary.

8.4

Educational Trust

As per attached management accounts and reports.

TUC

Because of the General Council Dinner being held on the Sunday this year, our normal social was not held and due to costs we did not have a stall. The Vice President kindly organised an excellent visit to the PFA on the Monday evening and a following meal which the GFTU covered. Five non affiliates attended and were impressed. Massive thanks to the PFA it was really brilliant.

We had a ‘different’ graphic type page advert in the programme.

INTERNATIONAL

10.1

Venezuela.

A draft report has been received from our two attendees on the Venezuela study visit. They are prepared to attend the BGCM but were unable to attend this EC.

Report attached.

10.2

Vietnam.

At very short notice we organised at the request of the Vietnamese embassy two meetings for an eleven strong delegation of the Hanoi Federation of Trade Unions. Thanks to the Vice President and Bobby Barnes a very successful meeting was held in the London office of the PFA, thanks to the education officer of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and officers of Trade Mark a very successful meeting was held in Belfast.

Appreciation was sent for our efforts by the embassy.

I have offered Quorn as a potential venue for a Vietnamese cultural evening.

10.3

Kurdish issues and Turkey.

We receive a lot of short notice invitations to field speakers for various campaign events. The last one was to send someone to a European rally in Dusseldorf. It proved impossible to find anyone available.
