The Alte Pinakothek is one of the oldest and most important galleries in the world. It houses more than 800 paintings (mostly from the 13 th to 18 th centuries) just waiting to be admired in this exceptional art gallery. The Alte Pinakothek was designed by Leo von Klenze for King Ludwig I. A triumph of modernity in its time, the building functioned as the architectural compass for additional museum building projects in Germany and the rest of Europe, as well as for galleries in Rome, Saint Petersburg and so on. As with the Alte Pina- kothek, the Neue Pinakothek was built by Friedrich von Gärtner under King Ludwig I. and was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War and later rebuilt.
