History from below is history at its best. Too often our Island’s story is framed by the tales of Kings and Queens, the rich, the powerful and the greedy. As a result, there is a tendency to believe that radicalism, daring change and innovation have no place within the fabric of British society and in the shaping of the course of its rich, troubled and creative history. Yet, nothing could be further from the truth.

There is another undercurrent that speaks of the power of ordinary – yet extraordinary – women and men to shape and re-shape their worlds, their language, communities and their own lives. From Wat Tyler and the Peasants Revolt to the English Revolution of the Seventeenth Century; and from the Chartists through to the forging of the Labour and Women’s Movements, British radicals forged their own ‘hidden histories’ that spoke of courage, dignity, action, collective struggle – and, always, of hope. These GFTU Day Schools aim to make these times live again through talks, songs, stories and films. Each day school is led by experts in their field and is aimed at all those who would like to know something of the birth and growth of the Socialism and trade unionism that we know today in Britain. No previous knowledge is required as this programme aims to inspire as well as to educate us all.
