THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE was originally founded in 1952 as the Ca li fornia Ba sketba ll Association to prov ide a conveni ent venue for fi ve San Francisco Bay Area sc hoo ls t o compet e in basketba ll. Since that modest beg inn ing, the Conference has evo lved into a nati ona ll y recognized and competiti ve fo rce w ithin the NCAA. T he leag ue formally know n as the West Coast Athletic Conference currently sponsors 13 sports: baseball, both men's and women 's basketball, cross cou ntry, gol f, soccer, and tennis; and women's vol leyba ll and crew . FROM THE PINE FORESTS of Ea stern Washington, to the Columbia River Ba sin , to the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area, to the sunn y beaches of Southern Cal ifornia , the cu rrent WCC membership spans the western coast of the United States . The Conference is characterized by the stabi lity of its membership, as only two NCAA Division I conferences nationally have been together longer. S ince its birth in 1952, the WCC has been a dominant force in intercollegiate athletics, boa st ing 33 NCAA individual and team championships . And while titles are being ea rned on the field , degrees are being earned in the classroom, as the wee is home to numerous Academi c All -Americans. And after graduation, West Coast Conference alumni have continued to flourish , as some of the world 's elite athletes started in the wee. THE so-YEAR H ISTORY OF THE wee demonstrates that success in interco llegiate athletics can be built on the foundation of values, character and academics .
