USD Volleyball 1985

1985 USO VOLLEYBALL PROSPECTUS What a difference one year can make. Last year the USD volleyball team featured six seniors and only two freshmen-the 198.5 squad has just one senior and 11 newcomers to the USD program. In 1004, the Toreros were an independent-this year they join the)'1ewly-formed West Coast Athletic Con– ference for women. A year ago the team could only muster a 7-18 record-this lime around it remains to be seen how the Toreros will fare. "It's really hard to tell," responded Coach John Martin when asked about his 198.5 team. ''The kids are so young. The biggest problem will be con– sistency. But the kids really get along well. They're working hard and are rea~ ly enthusiastic." The Toreros will be counting heavily on the play and leadership of junior Gina Trapletti, a 5-8 outside hitter. Also back from a year ago is senior setter Ellen Silber, who will be playing in her fourth season for Martin. The team's only two other returnees are sophomores Kris Mitchell and Loretta O'Connor, both of whom should see a lot of playing time. Obviously, USD will be looking for contributions from a number of first– year players. Lisa Edler is a 5-11 sophomore who played last season at San Diego Community College and should help as a middle blocker. Teresa Myers and Heidi Bruning are a pair of freshmen Martin hopes can contribute. Myers is a setter from Santa Barbara, while El Cajon-native Bruning is another 5-11 middle blocker. Martin likes the idea of playing in a conference. 'We've been waiting for this for a long time," said Martin, who is beginning his 11th season at USD. 'We can key on conference matches. Pepperdine and Santa Clara are pro– bably the two strongest teams (in the conference), but everybody after that is even." The other four schools in the WCAC are Loyola Marymount, Nevada– Reno, San Francisco and United States International.

HEAD COACH JOHN MARTIN

John Martin is entering his 11th season as the head coach of. the University of San Diego women's volleyball team. Since the program's inception in 1975, John has guided the Toreros to an overall record of 113-110, including post-season ap– pearances three times. In 1976, the women finished in fourth place at the AIAW Small College Nationals, then claimed fifth in both 1977 and 1978 at the WAIAW Regionals.

Under John's direction, the volleyball program has grown from Division II status to its current NCAA Division I level. This year the women will join six other schools to form a women's West Coast Athletic Conference. John is a graduate of San Diego State University where he received both his B.A. and Master's degree in History. The Mar– tins, including wife Jane, daughter Eliza and son Patrick, reside in Encinitas.
