Bolivia! ADVENTURES IN A SURREAL LAND

From the great salt deserts of the Salar de Uyuni to the mysterious stone monuments of Tiwanaku, Bolivia is a land of mesmerizing beauty, fascinating cultures, and rich history. We hike trails on the serene Isla del Sol in Lake Titicaca—the island is the legendary birthplace of the Incas. Sucre and Potosí hold a fascinating colonial past, and we’ll have lunch with weavers in charming Tarabuco. Our hikes and explorations of the lunar landscapes of the Salar de Uyuni take us into remote, untouched settings. Bolivia has a renowned food scene, and our Farewell Dinner in La Paz is at its top restaurant. Our Trip Leaders unlock the secrets of this ancient land with their expertise, and our welcoming lodgings include a historic hacienda and a unique “salt” hotel in the desert. Days 1-2 La Paz / Tiwanaku In the highest capital in the world, we ride a cable car for panoramic views, walk through the city’s open-air markets including the “witches’ market,” and spend a day at Tiwanaku, the monumental ruins of pre-Inca culture near the southern shores of Lake Titicaca.

The town is home to the Yampara culture, and we’ll meet Yampara weaver-artisans here, including a private lunch with people from the local community. Days 5-6 Hacienda de Cayara / Potosí Colonial Potosí (13,315') was the epicenter of Spanish rule in the Bolivian highlands. We visit its grand colonial buildings, including the Casa de Moneda (the Mint), where millions of dollars’ worth of silver was processed and shipped to Spain, and enjoy overnights in a family-owned 16th century hacienda in a countryside setting. Days 7-10 Explore the Salar de Uyuni The spectacular Salar de Uyuni (11,800') is the largest salt flat in the world. In this glittering white desert, we head into the astonishing world of the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve to explore and hike among bizarre stone formations and multi-colored lakes. One of our hotels is built almost entirely out of salt blocks! Days 11-14 Lake Titicaca / Isla del Sol On Lake Titicaca, we boat out to the Isla del Sol, the Incas’ “birthplace of the sun,” for hikes to Inca sites and walks through the villages of this island lost in time. Overnights are in a spectacularly located ecolodge. We return to La Paz for our festive Farewell Dinner and depart on Day 14.
