The precipitous Amalfi Coast has long been exalted as the most spectacular in all Europe. Across the blue Bay of Naples lies enticing Capri, a jewel of an island soaring out of azure waters. We’ve combined these two glorious settings with wonderful hikes that take us along the coast from top-of-the-world Ravello to the highest point on Capri, and across the Sorrento Hills, with a final walk along the brooding crater rim of Mt. Vesuvius. Between hikes, we’ll watch mozzarella di bufala being made at a farm, visit a family-run olive farm, and explore the haunting ruins at Herculaneum and Paestum. Days 1-3 Naples / Herculaneum / Paestum / Ravello After a delicious pizza lunch in the city where it was invented, we stroll the lanes of the fascinating Roman city of Herculaneum, buried in ash (yet remarkably preserved) when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. We explore Greek-era Paestum, with its iconic Doric temples, have lunch at a buffalo farm where fresh mozzarella di bufala is made, and hike up ancient pathways to the entrancing town of Ravello, with its incredible perch above the sea. attracted writers, artists, and musicians for centuries. Another hike is a leisurely descent from Ravello to the seaside town of Amalfi. Days 4-7 Sentiero degli Dei / Positano / Capri / Sorrento On the Sentiero degli Dei (“Pathway of the Gods”), one of the finest walks on the Amalfi Coast, we hike across terraced hillsides to Positano, with its brightly painted houses draped in bougainvillea. Ferrying to the storied isle of Capri, our hikes lead along stone-paved lanes to the ruins of imperial Roman villas and to the summit of Monte Solaro, with its panoramic views of the bay. In the sunny Sorrento Hills, we visit an olive oil farm run by the same family since 1849 and hike through lemon and walnut groves to the beautiful seaside town of Sorrento. Days 8-9 Mt. Vesuvius / Naples Our last hike takes us along a crater rim above the steaming abyss of the Mt. Vesuvius’ caldera, followed by lunch and wine tasting at a winery on the volcano’s slopes. Depart on Day 9 via Naples.
