The mission of the Athletic Performance Training program is to physi– cally and mentally prepare each student athlete for the rigorous demands of championship level competition within their sport. Four primary goals define the focus of the Athletic Performance Training Program. First, to reduce the potential risk and severity of sport related injury. Second , to enhance athletic performance as measured through speed , acceleration and deceleration , power, strength, flexibility, and metabolic condition ing evaluations . Third , to develop the mental discipline required to concentrate on the task at hand and execute with confidence and poise during preparation and competition . Finally, to teach the process of achievement that requires an accountable attitude , consistent commitment, relentless effort and enthusiasm to achieve demanding goals. Training programs are designed with a tiered priority first for general athletic development, then sport and position specific requirements are ac– counted for, and finally individual

needs and considerations are addressed . New student athletes are orien– tated to the expectations and instructed on the fundamental techniques of each exercise in their program individually by a staff member during their fi rst few weeks on campus to ensure a commitment to techn ique and safety is established . Team sports nutrition education sessions are conducted to teach stu– dent athletes the concepts of energy and macronutrient requirements , meal plann ing , food choices , lifestyle habits and supplement use . Individualized consu ltation is also provided to student athl etes whose goals may be to increase lean muscle or decrease body composition. The Toreros train in the 5,000 square foot Varsity Ath leti c Weight Room located at the Sports Center that features 12 Olympic platforms, eight power racks , dumbbells rang ing from five to 150 pounds , cardiovascular equipment, selectorized machines , core and stability training devices and is available exclusively to USO student athletes .
