THE countdown to Christmas in Hungerford begins on Sunday, December 2, with the switch-on of the renowned lights display. The town is hugely proud of the annual spectacle, which has been dubbed ‘the best in the south west’. The High Street is always packed with families for the free occasion and the fun starts at 4pm outside the Town Hall,

with live music, a brass band and other entertainment. Throwing the switch this year at 5pm will be Sally Taylor from BBC South Today . At 6.30pm, St Lawrence Church hosts an Advent carol service. it’s the Christmas Extrava- ganza . This will be the 26th consecutive year in which the event has been held. Around 10,000 people attend on the night, to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the fair- ground attractions and the hospitality offered by stalls and businesses. Many of the town’s shops stay open during the event, along with its pubs and restaurants.
