CLASS OF 1947 BURSARY TOTAL AS AT MAY 31, 2017

CLASS REPS: Beverly Brockett West and Carol McKee Wishart Zaira (Zi) Murray Aspinall enjoys life in her native Costa Rica, reading, taking daily walks in her bird-friendly garden, meeting friends for lunch and visiting the farm on which she grew up. Three of her five children live nearby. Frances (Jo) Shirley Short in Prince Albert, SK has special memories of Havergal, including making friends with girls from other countries and from Toronto. Margaret (Marg) Scarth McClelland has been in hospital in Vancouver following a fall which resulted in a broken arm. Pat Hamilton Ingraham lives in Hamilton and has six great-grandchildren, with two more on the way! She wrote about the last 25 years of her church’s 175-year history, updating her earlier chronicle of the first 150. A family Thanksgiving get-together at Clyffe House on Mary Lake is the highlight of every year. Always enthusiastic, Jean Folster is happy in Newmarket, spending time with her late sister’s family, including five great-nieces and -nephews. She keeps in touch with a number of our classmates and reports that Jane Beaumont Carnegy has moved into a retirement home in Halifax, where she is close to her son Eric. Although slowed by arthritis and heart problems, Joan Burry Brown has great fun with her great-grandson and still summers in Haliburton. Severe arthritis confines Suzanne Harkins Detenbeck to her condo with a full-time caregiver. Elizabeth (Liz) Gartshore Young writes about the “senses” of life in Scotland – the taste of haggis with neeps and tatties washed down with whiskey, the sight of mountains covered with snow, touch football, the smell of a peat fire and the glorious sound of a lone piper standing on the ramparts at Edinburgh Castle at the close of the Tattoo. Following a bad fall, Joan Ellis Langdon is now in a wheelchair and in full-time care. She loves to sing and enjoys singalongs in her residence. Beverly (Bev) Brockett West is still living in her home of 65 years and is anticipating the births of her first two great-grandchildren. She has been volunteering at Oakville Hospital for 36 years. In the 1970s, Betty (Kim) Kimbark Ondaatje gave up painting and turned her attention to the environment and to Blue Roof Farm. She manages the property on her own, gathering and burning brush accompanied by her black German shepherd,

a change from the Dalmatians that she bred for many years. Her diet is almost entirely organic and she lives without TV or Internet. A biography of her interesting life will appear soon. Our sincere sympathy to Diana (Di) Jacob Goad , whose husband Larry passed away in February. Sadly, since last year, we have lost seven of our beloved classmates: June Johnson Surgey in June, Gail Hutchison in August, Joan Ballantyne Redfern in September, Gloria Dow Stewart in October, Daphne Fisher Currie in October, Shelagh Dunwoody Whitaker in December and Margaret Cochrane Harling in April. Daphne, who served as Class Rep for many years, was always willing to help arrange a reunion and graciously welcomed us into her lovely home for many of them. Shelagh was the driving force behind our wonderful 50th Reunion (20 years ago!) and the creation of the Class of 47 Golden Years Book . She, too, was a Class Rep for many years and we enjoyed the benefit of her organizing and journalism skills. They will all be very much missed. Seventy years ago now, we were in Sixth Form, studying for departmental exams and thinking of universities and careers. Since then, our paths and accomplishments have been many and varied. Each of us can be proud of the life which we have made for ourselves. We have had some wonderfully successful reunions and, in October, it will be time to mark our 70th! Information about plans, perhaps for a luncheon, will be sent closer to the date. Our Class of 1947 Bursary continues to grow and to help provide a valued Havergal education to the recipients. Don’t forget to mark your donations to “The Class of 1947 Bursary Fund” and continue to make a difference in the lives of deserving students.
