Chronicle 2017

CLASS NEWS

One of the highlights of Catherine (Cathy) Robinson Clark ’s past year was a trip to Iceland with Margaret (Margie) Angel, Patricia (Tricia) Ralph and Cathy’s husband Peter. Together, they drove the perimeter of the country and enjoyed visiting waterfalls, geysers, glaciers and turf homes. Tricia even connected with an 11th- generation cousin! For myself, Jennifer Carter , 2016 was a busy year as I continue my role as president and CEO of

Hermès Canada. It was also a year marked by travel and adventure, as I was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit Venice and the Dolomites in Italy, Beijing and The Great Wall of China, Paris, Western Canada and the United States. Most important, I successfully completed one full year of marriage to Michael Cassels. We wish our cherished Havergal community much happiness in 2017!

CLASS REPS: Erica Benson and Edwina Dick Stoate Happy birthday, everyone! We’re 60 years young! Clela Errington is active on the music scene, singing harmonies with her daughter Jocelyn and other singer/ songwriters. Clela often returns to Brockville to visit her mum. Kathryn (Kathy) Ensor Baranowski celebrated her mum Mary Clemes 1944’s 90th birthday with a Canada/New England cruise and is thrilled that her youngest son Zach has graduated. Philippa Campsie , an adjunct professor at U of T, teaches in the department of geography and planning and does research for a foundation focused on urban and regional policy. Philippa and her husband Norman regularly visit Paris and co- author a blog about the French capital. Margot Daly Baker continues travelling, still undecided about where to settle down. Susan Rutherford is heading to Spain in May. Anne Jarrett Vernon celebrated her 40th wedding anniversary in England with a stop at the Hampton Court flower show. Gwynneth (Gwyn) Rew Grant is celebrating five happy years of marriage and two gorgeous step-grandsons. She enjoys work, travel and nurturing her tomato plants well into October! Anne Livingston Murray joined her Scotland-based son for a five-day hike on the West Highland Trail. She loves working in stress and anxiety reduction in children and with families who have children with disabilities. Ann Fleury Underwood retired from 36 years of teaching in French immersion for a new career in psychotherapy. Her three children have flown the coop. Ann’s mum Barbara Shenstone Fleury Dowie 1933 died this year at age 101, one of the oldest Stoneagers in

HC history! Edwina Dick Stoate travels often: to Hong Kong for work and to Kentucky and Sweden to visit her daughters. Her first granddaughter recently turned one. This winter, she went hiking in Patagonia with Deb Cumming 1973. Joanne Hemmant Strecker had a stressful year. Her parents died within months of each other and her father- in-law died last spring. Happily, her daughter Kristina completed her master’s in architecture at UBC and returned home for an extended visit before moving to Switzerland. Joanne visited England in the spring. Lani Schmidt Lorenz frequently visits her two grandsons in Toronto and enjoyed four trips last year to celebrate her 60th. Smitty’s Fine Furniture is booming, so Lani stays very busy. Martha Hilton Ellis has lived in Florida for the past 16 years, but returns to Georgian Bay each summer. Jennifer Stutz Flexton divides her time between bucolic English village life and beachy Naples, Florida. Megan Honsberger Turtle is enjoying being Gran to Greydon, 3. Erica Benson loves exploring the ravines and downtown neighbourhoods of Toronto with her four-legged shadow, Tallulah. We have arrived at that point where our parents are elderly or have passed on. We are – or have been – their caregivers where once they were ours. Many of you have written about this. As Anne Livingston Murray wrote: “It marks a time of ‘seizing the moment’ for the next years. As we move beyond 40 Years On , may the year be filled with good health and adventure for our great Class of 1975.”
