EARL (BUD) BATTEATE

Born April 10 to PRCA bull rider Pistol Preece and his wife, Halley, of Midloathian, Texas, a girl, Parker, weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 18½ inches long.

Earl (Bud) Batteate, a resident of Hayward, Calif., and a member of the Cowboys’ Turtle Association, passed away March 28 at the age of 99. He was born in Oakland, Calif., Nov. 20, 1918. As a young man, he broke horses for Harry Rowell of Rowell Rodeo, then became a bronc rider. He later joined his father in the cattle ranching business, which merged into Batteate Livestock Transportation Co. After the closing of the trucking business, Batteate continued in cattle ranching in Hayward and later in Northern California and Nevada. Batteate was preceded in death by his brother, Alfred; ex-wife, Patricia Batteate; oldest son, Dan, his wife, June; grandson, Daniel; and great- grandson, Ronny. Batteate is survived by sons Mike (Kath) and Nick (Carolyn); grandchildren Gino, Vito, Dom, Norman, Patty, Dennis, Cathy and Vincent, their families, and many great-grandchildren, great- great-grandchildren and cousins. BRIEFS Pete Carr Pro Rodeo bucking horse passes away Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s bareback horse 579 Outa Sight suffered a fatal bout of colic April 4 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. “We saw that she was in distress, so we drove her two hours north to Gainesville last night for surgery,” said Billy Jones, who was overseeing operations for the Carr team while in Florida. “She died as they were preparing her for surgery.” The mare was 13 years old and had bucked at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo five times in her career. She was also a veteran at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, where she was expected to perform at the 2018 RAM NCFR, which began April 5 and concluded April 8 in Kissimmee, Fla. “She’s always been the one to have any time you go to a rodeo,” said bareback rider Caleb Bennett, a six-time NFR qualifier. Bennett won a lot of money on the powerful paint, which was sired by the legendary stallion Night Jacket. Carr purchased her as a 2-year-old ROBERT (BOB) L. LEMOINE Robert “Bob” L. LeMoine, 90, of Spooner, Wis., passed away March 24, surrounded by his family. LeMoine was the last remaining original member of the Spooner Rodeo and had been

LeMoine got a job at Baker Farm in Madge and by the time he was 16, he was a herdsman. He worked for Wests in Sarona, Barron Electric, Sawmill in Haugen, Spooner Feed Mill and Locker Plant until 1967. He also worked at BensonThompson for the past 50 years. He farmed his entire life in the Spooner area. In the early 1950s, Bob worked with Arnie Drost for the Washburn County Sheriff ’s Department. He was also a deputy for Burnett County. LeMoine was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Valeria; and sisters Lauretta Siede and Norma Diekman. LeMoine is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and five children, Linda (Tom) Gurtner, Laurie (John) Camp, Lorna (Randy) Moore, Londa (Mick) Olsen, and Robert (Julie) LeMoine; 33 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, four great- great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Krantz; brother, Keith (Geraldine) LeMonie; six step-children, Kevin (Laurie) Smith, Theresa Brunslik, Rodney Smith, Trudy Meister, Kenny Smith, and Tania Milton; and many foster children who were raised from Jim Zinser in Michigan after watching the mare buck with a mechanical dummy on her back. Outa Sight was first selected to perform at the NFR in 2010 at the age of 5. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (CT). Then, there will be a PRCA Rodeo Camp April 28 in Prescott, Ariz. The camp will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (PT). Stampede has created the Greeley Stampede Hall of Fame.
