Equifest Program 2021

SPECIAL DEMOS

The First Infantry Division (1ID) Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard is a special ceremonial unit that provides community relations and ceremonial support to the First Infantry Division, Fort Riley, and the United States Army at the local, regional, and national levels. The CGMCG is one of only seven active equestrian units in the Army. The mission of the CGMCG is unique because Fort Riley was the home of the US Army Cavalry School. The CGMCG helps to continue the historic tradition of the mounted cavalry through demonstrations and community engagement activities. All horses in the CGMCG are bay colored mustangs and quarter horses. The feature, which most distinguishes the CGMCG from other mounted units, is the inclusion of an 1871 covered escort wagon in the formation. The wagon is an original, restored wagon that was used to bring rations and ammunition to resupply cavalry troopers on the battlefield in the western frontier. The Soldiers of the Mounted Color Guard are Fort Riley Soldiers on a two year assignment. They represent all MOSs and ranks. Though some Soldiers arrive with significant horse experience, many have no experience. A rigorous 60-day training program ensures that all Soldiers in the CGMCG are expert horsemen prior to participation in public events.

Come see the CGMCG daily in TPEC Arena and at their encampment in the Stall Barn

The American Freedom Drill Team Riders from North Central Kansas return to EquiFest once again to entertain and open both arenas on Sunday. This team, established since 2012, has traveled to the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty, Abilene’s Chisolm Trail Days, Lawrence Christmas Parade, Scott City Rodeo, all over Kansas, up to Nebraska and over to Missouri performing at rodeos, festivals and parades. They’ve even been known to give pony rides at these events. Some honors and highlights include performing at the Kansas State Fair in 2019 on Sept. 11th honoring America’s Veterans & Military and performing the opening ceremonies for Naval Officer Installations in Hutchinson. The AFDTR loves riding and loves celebrating this great country and the men and women who previously or currently serve in the military! God Bless America!
