Outdoor horse activities are winding down for the season and horse owners are preparing for winter. I'll share with you a few highlights of horse activities in Northwest Kansas. It's a busy time of year for the Colby Community College (CCC) Equestrian Team. As I write this article, we are just finishing our fall semester of competitions. The CCC Equestrian Team is a member school of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and the only active member school in the state of Kansas. We are a part of Zone 8 Region 5 which includes two-year colleges and universities in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming.

IHSA is unique in the sense that it is competitive horse showing in a team environment. It is a true test of horsemanship ability as riders are placed in divisions according to their experience and riding ability, and riders draw for the horse they will compete on. This means that riders who have no experience can ride in the beginner division and riders who have years of show experience can compete in higher levels. The hosting school provides all the horses. The riders then draw for the horse they will compete on from a pool of horses appropriate for the student's riding level. We compete in both hunt seat and western disciplines with riders competing in equitation on the flat, equitation over fences, horsemanship, and reining. Riders are awarded points based on their placing at each horse show. After accumulating the required number of points, riders qualify for the regional horse show. Back Country Horsemen of Kansas! The parent organization, Back Country Horsemen of America (BCHA), has been dedicated to keeping public trails open to equestrians for 40 years. There are 13,000 members across the US with chapters in 26 states (27 counting Kansas!). Ask the Expert This is a new monthly feature courtesy of Denise Farris of Farris Law Firm. Denise is the founder and the Managing Member of the Farris Law Firm, L.L.C., where she practices general business law, commercial construction and equine law. To read her full resume Click Here . Each month Denise will answer your questions regarding equines and the law. If you have a question you would like to submit please send it to Ask the Expert . Question #1 Q: What is the potential liability exposure for members of equine riding clubs regarding club activities such as trail rides, fun days, etc? If there is an injury are all club members potentially liable? Should we secure liability releases from each member and guest for each event or could we use one blanket release? A: Riding clubs are voluntary associations. If a participant is injured during a club sponsored activity, lawsuits would be directed against the Club's Board of Directors or Officers. . For this reason every association should carry general liability insurance for year round activities, and special event insurance for such things as clinics, competitions, etc. Remember, the insurance covers not only the Club's potential damages to an injured party, but also the cost of legal defense. Its an expense well worth the money. Directors and officers should also check with their own personal insurance carriers about carrying separate Officer and Director Liability Coverage. This is an umbrella policy which means that in the event an Officer or Director is individually sued for actions arising out of the Club duties, and there is no insurance in place, or alternatively a gap in the primary coverage, then the umbrella policy kicks in. Finally, any riding association should have a blanket waiver signed by all club members waiving liability against the Club. This waiver can be included on the annual Club registration and/or renewal form. Guests should all be required to sign a separate waiver before being allowed to participate in any Club activity, as should Clinicians or other presenters for the Club. In following these suggestions, the Club and its members work towards structuring the maximum liability protection. Pesty is a Thoroughbred gelding born in 2012. He came to us in October, 2013 as an ow ner surrender. Pesty stands about 14.2 hands at 2 years old. His training will continue until he is adopted. New KHC Executive Director As 2017 comes to a close so does my tenure with the Kansas Horse Council. Serving KHC and the equine community for the past 9 1/2 years has been rewarding, challenging and most of all, incredibly wonderful! Thanks to everyone who has in any way been a part of KHC, Equifest, our trail rides, parades, Horse Care seminars, the license plate program, Operation Gelding clinics, scholarship program, regional meetings and many other KHC projects and activities. I'm looking forward to time with family and especially grandchildren. More time in the saddle is second on my list, so I hope to see lots of y'all out on the trail! Your new Executive Director, Brad Harrelson, as you can see from his bio below, is well equipped with the skills necessary to keep KHC growing and moving forward to meet the diverse needs of the Kansas equine industry. I'm excited for the future of the Kansas Horse Council!

Guest speaker will be Dexter Hedrick of the Hutchinson Correctional Facility sharing his experiences working with feral Mustangs and prison inmates in a program known as Saving Horses, Changing Men. The meeting will also include presentation of the Bud Newell Award and election of two new members to the board of directors. The lecture hall was full as Dr. Temple Grandin addressed attendees interested in learning more about equine communication and behavior. Dr. Elizabeth Davis, Dr. Chris Blevins and Dr. Jason Grady shared their expertise demonstrating how gastric ulcers, reproductive issues and oral problems can affect equine behavior. Chris Moran of the Hope and Healing Academy in Topeka brought two of their therapy horses and shared his experiences and skills using horses as therapy for youth and adults. The KSU Horsemen's Association hosted youth in Weber Arena with fun, learning activities. Brad Harrelson is the new Executive Director of the Kansas Horse Council. Mr. Harrelson brings over 25 years of experience representing Kansas agriculture and agri-business. Throughout his professional career in trade association management and service he has advocated on behalf of the grain and livestock industries in Kansas and Washington D.C. He is uniquely qualified to guide the Kansas Horse Council in the future. Brad lives in Topeka, Kansas and is a lifelong horse owner and still competes in team roping when time allows. His wife Cindy is an elementary school teacher and they are the proud parents of two daughters' one attending college and the other high school. He is enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with members, volunteers and the leadership of the Kansas Horse Council to promote the horse industry in Kansas.

"We will continue to work with our colleagues and allies on Capitol Hill to seek a long-term solution to this complex issue."

Born and bred by her previous owners (but never registered, though parentage is known), Brecken was the "best friend" to her owners daughter. As the daughter grewup and became a mother herself, Brecken remained very important but the time and resources to start her under saddle was unavailable. With a young toddler and a second child on the way, a relatively mild, but time consuming injury to a hoof was daunting. It became imperative that Brecken find a newhome where she could heal from the injury and move to saddle training and then to a newhome. Brecken is a sweet, calm and beautiful mare.
