Members of the Paola Rotary Club and their family members surprised a few Paola residents on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 14, by showing up with rakes in hand to help collect and bag leaves. The group of about 20 volunteers man- aged to clean up six yards and fill 110 bags of leaves! Thank you to Jimmy Hay and his fellow Community Projects Committee members for organizing the event, and thank you to Casey Crum and Family Center for donating the bags and Mike Hursey for taking the leaves. It was a great service project demon- strating Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self!”

We will not have our annual Farmers Night Steak Dinner this year due to COVID-19 and the older age of our local farmers, but we have organized a lun- cheon to show support for the Paola Police Depart- ment. The luncheon will be catered by Michelle at Town Square at a cost of $10 per person, and it will take place at noon Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Paola Justice Center. This will take the place of our regular meeting that week. There will be about 15 police officers there, and Rotary members may also attend. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at today’s meeting. Instead of fundraising to pay for the food, club members voted to bill each of our 32 members an extra $20. A meal was also planned for Paola firefighters, but they declined due to COVID-19.

During the Sept. 10 Paola Rotary Club meeting, club members discussed whether or not we should have our annual Farmers Night Steak Dinner that typi- cally takes place in October. There was some concern about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the age of most of our famers putting them in the high risk category. During the Sept. 17 meeting, club members voted to cancel Farmers Night for 2020. Casey Crum volunteered to chair a new committee focused on planning next year’s event or possibly an event to re- place it.The community projects committee planned to meet before today’s meeting and will give a report during the regular meeting. Matt Winterscheid’s pro- gram fell through for today, so we will also discuss any other outstanding issues during the free time and likely dismiss early.

During Mike Hursey’s program today he plans to talk about a proposed Rotary project that could help highlight the history of the buildings around the Square by placing a bronze plaque on the front facade. This would likely involve some fundraising and collaboration with the city, which would soon like to begin a downtown revitalization project.

No official decision regarding this year’s event was made.
