Архитектура, о которой пойдет речь, об- ладает необычным для этого монументально- го искусства качеством – мастерски «соткан- ные» поверхности-обертки придают ее фор- мам и пространствам некую привлекательную фигуральность и даже эротичность. Именно это последнее понятие объединяет изыскан- ные и замысловатые произведения Надера Терани и Моники Понсе де Леон, основате- лей бостонского архитектурного бюро Office dA (это название ничего не означает и про- износится как русское «да»). Архитекторы с виртуозностью модельеров обволакивают свои пространства в обертки с заклепками, складками, изгибами, отверстиями и другими орнаментообразующими приемами, ассоции- рующимися с индустрией моды. В чем смысл такой архитектуры и что преследуют в своем творчестве герои моего рассказа? Эти вопро- сы я адресовал самому Надеру Терани. Накануне моего интервью с Надером в его бостонском офисе я посетил две оригиналь- ные постройки по проектам бюро. Крошечная пиццерия Upper Crust (2001 г.) привлекает посетителей красивой интерьер- ной оберткой, собранной из десятков изо- гнутых стальных листов. Эта волнообразная оболочка не только скрывает неэстетичные трубы и воздуховоды на потолке, но и, спол- зая почти до самого пола по одной из стен, придает обычному помещению общепита со- временную обтекаемую форму модного «ку- линарного бутика», эффектно контрастирую- щего с исторической застройкой уютного бо- стонского района Бикон-Хилл. Мне также удалось побывать в крупнейшей на сегодняшний день постройке компании – в 140-квартирном кондоминиуме Macallen Building (2007 г.) в Южном Бостоне, где до- минируют железнодорожные пути, хайвэи, парковки, склады и живописные виды на пу- чок небоскребов даунтауна и залив. Среди наиболее интересных особенностей комплек- са – оригинальные трехуровневые квартиры с террасами, попарно расположенными на углах скошенного южного торца здания. Компания располагает тремя офисами: основ- ной – в Бостоне, где работают 18 архитекто- ров, и по одному – в Нью-Йорке и Мичигане, штатном университете которого Моника Пон- се де Леон является деканом. Среди других реализованных проектов компании – куль- турные центры, односемейные дома, кварти- ры, корпоративные интерьеры и рестораны в Китае, Венесуэле и США, а также мебель и художественные инсталляции. В последние месяцы бюро выиграло два международных конкурса на строительство новых зданий – архитектурной школы на кампусе Мельбурн- ского университета и факультета архитекту- ко талантливо придумывают чувственные и эротичные облицовки и формы, но и облада- ют даром создавать рациональные простран- ства и планировки. А выйдя на одну из торцо- вых террас, вы не ощущаете, что находитесь в многоквартирном комплексе. Testing the limits | Interview with Nader Tehrani | author Vladimir Belogolovsky Architecture at Office dA, the subject of the conversation that follows, possesses an unusual quality for such a monu- mental art form—masterfully “woven” seamless skins give its forms and spaces an attractive figurativeness and even erotic sensuality. These qualities unify the refined and sophisticat- ed works of Nader Tehrani and Monica Ponce de Leon, found- ers of this unique Boston practice. The fact that the name of their firm, pronounced like the Russian “da” for “yes,” does not stand for anything in particular might be viewed as an indication of the methodically undefined nature of the prac- tice itself. Employing the virtuosity of fashion designers, Tehrani and Ponce de Leon wrap their spaces in skin-surfaces adorned by folds, creases, apertures, and other pattern-making tech- niques. What is the intention of such architecture and what are the goals of its creators? I visited two of the firm’s local projects to reflect on these questions before addressing them to Nader Tehrani himself. Upper Crust, a tiny pizzeria built in 2001, attracts visitors with its beautiful interior wrapper, made of dozens of folded steel sheets. This wave-like shining surface not only hides util- ities such as piping and air ducts, but also, by fronting one of the walls, defines an ordinary eatery as a contemporary aero- dynamic form of a “culinary boutique,” effectively contrast- ing with cozy, historical buildings of its Beacon-Hill neighbor- hood. The Macallen Building, a condominium, finished in 2007, is the most sizeable project realized by the firm to date. Located in South Boston, it is surrounded by railroad yards, highways, parking lots, and warehouses, and proffers spectacular views over downtown’s skyscrapers and the harbor. Among the most interesting features of the complex are the original three-level apartments with terraces, coupled at corners along the slant- ed south end of the building. The complex provides convinc- ing evidence of the architects’ talents, not only for imagining sensual, erotic skins and forms, but also for creating rational spaces and layouts. If you go out onto one of the terraces, you will not sense that you are in a multi-story residential dwell- ing, as the roof slant that the architects employed to respond to two different zoning requirements smartly hides all neigh- boring apartments and terraces from sight. Tehrani and Ponce de Leon founded Office dA in 1991. The firm has three offices—one in Boston with eighteen architects, and smaller ones in New York and Michigan, where Ponce de Leon also serves as dean of the University of Michigan’s Taub- man School of Architecture. Among other realized projects, the architects have completed cultural centers, houses, apart- ments, corporate interiors, and restaurants in China, the Unit- ed States, and Venezuela, as well as furniture and art installa- tions. In recent months, the studio has won two international competitions: the University of Melbourne’s new Architecture School the University of Toronto’s architecture faculty building expansion. The Toronto design also brought the architects the prestigious P/A Award, the twelfth in their career. Tehrani was born in England. His father was a diplomat, and the family lived for a few years each in Italy, Iran, Pakistan, South Africa, and the United States. The architect was educat-
