COMMISSION XV

FUNDAMENTALS OF DESIGN AND FABRICATION FOR WELDING

r . CONSTITUTION AND TERMS OF REFERENCE.

At the Oxford Assembly in July r95r , the establishment of Commission XV was decided upon as the result of a memorandum, presentecl by the Italian delegation, on the subjects which could be studied by this Commission and on the direction which its work should take. It was not proposed to consider in detail any particular applications of welding in any branch of construction, but rather to deal with problems of common interest ; it was, however, necessary to take account of the special aspects presented by welding in each of its applic– ations so that these could be compared, thus allowing further knowledge to be gained about the possibilities of welded construction from the technical and economic points of view as well as from that of safety in service. The detailed programme, submitted t o the Commission in September 1952 at Goteborg, included three sectors of activity : welding design, fabrication and calculation. It was intended to deal with the two first subjects by devoting chapters to them in a code of practice, which would constitute a useful guide both to design offices preparing designs for welded constructions and to those responsible for c'arrying out the designs; the third subject vvas to be dealt with in appendices to this code. Subsequently, because of their importance, their urgency and the relative ease or difficulty with which agreement was reached, the different chapters and appendices of the code were not prepared in the order planned; instead, they have 2.
