B. Sub-Commission A « Brazing and Surfacing ». Without going into unnecessary detail by listing all the subj ects which might be studied within the terms of reference of Sub-Commission _-\ , mention may be made of two which are particularly interesting and are on the future agenda : the strength of brazed joints and productivity. C. Sub-Commission B « Oxygen Cutting ». Apart from the work accomplished and in hand described above, mention should be made of research work being carried out with a view to the prepara– tion of recommendations on the powder cutting of stainless steels. It is laid clown in the majority of countries that oxygen cut edges must be ground before welding and the Sub-Commission has undertaken an investigation on the phy– sical properties of edges which have been oxygen cut. Other work will follow and a recommendation will be prepared in the near future . The Sub-Commission is also studying the suitability for oxygen-cutting of mild and alloy steels and hopes to be able to prepare lists of such steels with, in each case, recommendations on the necessity fo r heat and other treatment. D. Sub-Commission C « Metallisation by Metal spraying » . The Sub-Commission is at present preparing its programn~e of work. ·with regard to metal spraying, the following documents have been sub– mitted to Commission I : l) a report by Mr. HAPPE (Netherlands) on the possibilities of the use of metal spraying and of different types of apparatus; z) a proposal from Dr. H. VoN H OFE (Germany) on the programme of work of the Sub-Commission « Metallisation by Metal spraying ». It was decided at Essen in 1957 to set up Sub-Commission C in view of t he growing interest of members in this problem. The Sub-Commission is made up of members from Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland. Its Chairman is Mr. M. K. To:-rnES PEDERSEN (Denmark). It will hold its first meeting in Vienna in 1958 when its definitive programme of work will be drawn up. E . Working Group « Methods of oxy-acetylene welding ». This \Vorking Group is studying the different methods of gas welding with a view to compa ring them one with another and to classifying them, using a precise terminology which will clearly reveal their characteristics.

5. CONCLUSION.

These ten years of work have enabled delegates and experts to form a group within which it has been possible to discuss the different problems raised . Al– though there were many differences of opinion at the beginning, it was possible t o find unanimous solutions aft er test s were jointly carried out. There is no doubt that in the future still more fruitful work will be clone on the new processes allied to welding properly speaking which are finding ever widening fields of application .
