WELDED ART PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION THE ARTISTIC SOUL OF WELDING

COMPETITIONS AS CATALYSTS FOR CAREERS IN WELDING

As with other IIW Members, the Japan Institute of Welding (JIW) is a keen supporter of welding competitions for young people, such as in the WorldSkills International competitions. Competitions have been very successful by enhancing the image of welding and to interest young people to take up a career in welding. The Japan Welding Engineering Society (JWES), the industrial membership arm of JIW, has been holding national welding competitions since 1951. In high schools, JWES has supported young people who participate in competitions and it expects to continue to play a big role with its support. Such initiatives have grown to the extent whereby various competitions in welded art in high schools of engineering and technology have been introduced in various Prefectures. Teams of students and staff are encouraged to participate thus helping to enhance not only the skills of the participants but also to instil the culture of the importance of welding in developing careers. The winning exhibits from past competitions “Flying to the future”, “Hanging cradle tree of life” and “A wild lion catches a rabbit in teamwork” are testimony to the success of these initiatives.
