FEBRUARY 2017 BEACON
From the Editor…
Farewell Salute: P/C Joe Cox Before proceeding through this month’s Beacon I hope you’ll take a moment and join me in reflecting upon the service, dedication, and gifts to this club from P/C Joe Cox. While I didn’t get to know this man well, we did have one close conversation. It was last fall after the luncheon provided by the Ancient Mariners to introduce the years Director Candidates to the Ancient Mariners. Joe waved me over for a chat. I never got the impression I was being tested or even interviewed. Joe wanted to tell me things he knew about the club and infrastructure that would be of value to future directors. He was gifting his knowledge to me. I found him to be a strong, gentle man who cared deeply about his family and his club. He was quick to smile and laughed easily. A man gains a certain strength, a certain calmness, a confidence in himself when he knows he has the love and respect of family and friends. Clearly the man before me had it. I chose to adorn the cover photo with verses 9 and 10 from the 139th Psalm. The Psalm begins with verses about how the Lord knows each of us, who we are, and what we think. He knows us as we’re created, how as unique individuals we’re knitted together by our Creator one by one, each of us with a specific purpose. The Psalm segues to verses referring to our ultimate destiny and the return of our bodies to the ash and dust of the earth and our living soul meeting and residing in the house of the Lord. In the middle of the Psalm though, are verses 9 & 10 referring to the Lord’s presence with us; regardless of where we go, or whatever we do, we are not alone. It has the added benefit of paying homage to those of us who prefer to go to sea. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there thy hand shall lead me and thy right hand shall hold me fast. I thought this appropriate for the gentle man who waved me over for a chat. I hope you do too. BlueSkies&FollowingSeas, Ron

Commodores Comments…
Nancy and I would like to thank all of you who attended our Commodore’s Ball and shared a great and wonderful evening with us. From the comments we have received, both during and after the Ball, everyone enjoyed the festivities and had a great time. We would also like to thank all those who helped in the planning, preparation, setup, execution, and teardown of the Ball. When looking back on all of the hard work that it takes to host the Ball, it is a shame that the evening flies by so quickly. I would like to congratulate the Spirit Award recipients, Glenn and Sheila Nixon and our newest Member of the Year, Debbie Siwek, thanks for all of your hard work and service to our club. Congratulations also goes to our latest PC Chuck Stroh and his wife Sandy for officially ending their year at the helm of NCYC. The weekend work schedule is starting to fill up. Please send in your request as soon as you can as the schedule is based on first come first choose. We also have 5 weeks left open on the Weekday Managers schedule. Please step up and volunteer to take a week, it’s not really that difficult and you may even enjoy it. The bar refinishing project is moving along and will be ready to be reinstalled in early April. Depending on the weather we have another 6 to 8 weeks before we can start spending our Saturdays back on the island. Just a reminder that the ABYA Spring Rendezvous is March 10th, 11th and 12th in Midland Mi. Please think about attending. In all actuality, we will be back at the Club before we know it. I can hardly wait.

Vice Commodores Comments…
For those of you who attended the Commodore’s Ball, I am sure you will agree that it was a fantastic venue and a great time was had by all. It was wonderful to see so many of our members in attendance, especially our past commodores. Many thanks to Commodore Pat and his Lady Nancy for hosting an enjoyable evening. As we start the month of February, it is exciting to see so many postings regarding the short amount of time left until the start of spring and boating season. Although Punxsutawney Phil is predicting 6 more weeks of winter, many of us are already visiting our boats and making plans for launch dates. Speaking of launch dates, the opening of the club is just over three months away. Our Club Secretary, Glenn Nixon, is working hard on assigning dates for everyone to get their work hours in for 2017. As your Vice Commodore, I look forward to working with Commodore Pat and Rear Commodore Ian as well as our new Board members, as we steer the ship toward another successful year at NCYC.
Regards, V/C Randy Pagel
Get the retirement youwant.
It’s never too soon to start planning.
Many of us have a clear vision of our retirement years. Yet, a surprising number of people have no idea how they’ll turn those dreams into reality. The fact is today’s retirement takes more than savings and Social Security. It requires a financial plan that addresses your needs, wants and how you’ll pay for them. That’s where I can help. Together, we’ll create a plan to help your money work long enough and hard enough to fund the retirement you envision. LIFEWELLPLANNED. Contact me to get started.

Rear Commodores Comments…
NCYC 2017 is definitely in full swing kicking off the year with the Commodore’s Ball. Everyone who was in attendance can attest to the good time had by all! Thank you Commodore Pat and his Lady Nancy Carroll for a wonderful evening. Each year the immediate Past Commodore has the daunting task of choosing the Hatzenbuhler and Spirit Award recipients. P/C Stroh’s choices were definitely hard to make with so many members going above and beyond the call of duty and gave so much of their time to our Club in 2016. Congratulations to Debbie Siwek, Glenn Nixon and Sheila Nixon, you are amazing and deserving members. Your Board is continually hard at work taking care of Club business to support a successful 2017. Some highlights are changing all of our banking needs to the Fifth Third Bank, recruiting and establishing the required Committees that support our projects and taking care of all the membership dues, and assisting the new Directors as they are jumping right in with their new roles and responsibilities. The NCYC 2017 Event Calendar has been populated and posted to our website. This is a great tool when planning your summer and scheduling your weekend visits to the island. Please take a minute to review so that you may attend our activities and events. We look forward to a great year full of participation! Coming up in March is the ABYA Spring Rendezvous and the Blessing of the Fleet at Mariners’ Church. Another important Board duty during the winter is to fill the Week Day managers list. As of now, we still have five weeks opened. If you or groups of you are thinking of taking a week, please reach out to Dick Raymond (captdout2c@yahoo.com/ 810-794-4850) as he will be pleased to help you find a suitable week and can provide you with more details. At the time of writing this article there are 73 days until the first Elite Brigade and 114 days to the opening weekend! We will be on our precious island before we know it. R/C Ian Blackburn

NOTES FROM CHAPLAIN ART BROOKS 2002 Past Commodore, Joe Cox passed away last month. Joe worked for the gas company in the financial division and brought many of his talents to our board . After his time on the board, Joe maintained his dedication in helping to maintain our water purification plant according to the specs that were required by the State of Michigan. Joe was very much involved in the engineering and planning of bringing the three utilities under the North Channel to the island. PC Joe will be missed by many. Roseann Wagner, wife of our 1980 Commodore Ernie Wagner recently passed away. Many of the senior members of the club will remember Ernie and his lovely wife. Please remember our members who have passed away in your daily prayers and thoughts. We send sincere condolences to the Cox and Wagner families.

I’m thankful for the many things My God has given me His blessings are like grains of sand Or waves upon the sea, Each breath I take reminds me That truly, God is love, For the bounty I’ve been given Was sent from Him above – The beauty that surrounds me Gives me peace of mind, Just seeing His creation Through eyes that once were blind— Too many are the stars to count In just one galaxy. So may are your blessings, Lord, That you have given me!

Member of the Month
PC Rick and Jill, what can we say, since joining the club in 1995 they have been some of the most active members in the club’s history, and they keep on giving. It is members like PC Rick and Jill that define the true NCYC DNA of unselfish volunteerism and endless generosity. We want to give them a big thank you for kicking off their 15th year organizing and overseeing the NCYC bowling league. What started off as a fund raiser has evolved into the social event from November until April that keeps us glued together through the off-season months. Thank you from the membership to PC Rick and Jill, we are proud to present you the Order of the Anchor for December 2016. P/C Chuck Stroh

First Mates of North Channel Yacht Club
Dear First Mates,
I have been appointed by our President Linda Pagel to chair the 2017 First Mates By-Law Committee. The Purpose of the Committee will be to review the current First Mates By-Laws and ensure they are inline with the new NCYC By-Laws. I would like to invite any current First Mates to join our committee who are interested in helping with our 2017 By-Law “review”. I am hoping to form a committee of four. The plan would be to set up monthly “Skype” meetings throughout the winter and hold in person meetings during the summer. To join the committee, you would need to have access to Skype, as this will be the medium used during the winter months .
If you have interested, please contact me at mariejospepin@gmail.com
Again thank you, I truly look forward to working with you.
