People who know me well have often referred to me as a Lunatic, and that’s when they’re being kind. Literally, it’s a term identifying people who pay too much attention to the moon, I always just figured I was born under a Full Moon. I think it’s also because I have a way of looking at things in a way that doesn’t occur to most people and then saying what everyone else is thinking but can’t figure out how to verbalize. Recently I looked up the old lunar calendars and found that while I wasn’t born under a Full moon, there’s a very high probability that I was conceived under one, which explains a lot. See what I mean? As a child my dad often showed me the moon particularly when it was full, I’ve always looked up to see it and still remember wondering why I could see it during daylight in the morning one day in the early 1960’s. One of my favorite things about our house in Casco is the farm fields to the North of our home. The nearest street light is a mile away. As a result, I get many great views of the moon all the time and rarely miss a chance to look up for it each night. I also like to look North and find the North Star, (Polaris) especially when there’s no moon. My dad also showed me, as a child, the Big Dipper and how to use it to find the North Star, which is also the end of the handle on the Little Dipper. I’ve used these and other celestial wonders to find my way home from out of sight of land several times without the aid of anything more advanced than a magnetic compass. In case you haven’t heard, there’s quite a hoopla for the Lunar Enhanced among us this month. The night of January 31-February 1, marks a rare event for us, the second full moon in January is a Blue Moon, this one however is also a Super Moon, a Blood Moon, and will feature a full eclipse if you’re in the Southern Ocean, these features occur early morning Jan 31. What a Great way to finish the month and segue into February. The cover was shot at Nokomis Beach early this morning Jan 31. Speaking of Hoopla, the Commodore’s Ball went off with out a hitch. This marks the kick off of our new season at the Club and Randy and Linda deserve a big round of applause. Many photos were taken and some are featured on Face Book if you’re so inclined. As I write this article, the Commodore’s 2018 Ball is now over. It was a very emotional event for Linda and me as we were surrounded by great friends of NCYC. It gave us a chance to introduce to the Club the new 2018 Flag officers and Board of Directors. The support and reassurances we received were overwhelming. We had close to 200 friends who joined us for a night that we will never forget. I want to thank all of you who attended and made that evening so special. It is now February and the middle of winter. All of us are thinking spring and wanting to start getting our boats ready for the summer fun at NCYC. There is still time to join over 60 of your fellow NCYC members for the Commodore’s Cruise in September. The cruise will take us from New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia along the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Please contact me if you are interested in joining us or have questions. We still have two (2) open weekday

The 2018 Commodores Ball has come and gone and is now documented in the NCYC history books. I would like to both congratulate and thank Commodore Randy and his Lady Linda for hosting such an exceptional event! From my observation, everyone had an excellent time and this 2018 NCYC year has undeniably been kicked off on the right foot. We all concur with PC Pat and Nancy Carroll’s decisions for the 2017 awards being spot on: The Spirit award recognizes a couple that worked hard bringing the club together in a positive environment. PC Tom & Judy McHugh certainly accomplished that as Fleet Captains during 2017 rendezvous. The 2017 Hatzenbuhler recipients, PC Brian & Renee McEvoy have given so much to this club. They have worked tirelessly, both in the spotlight and behind the scenes, doing what they can for the success of NCYC. Congratulations to both couples on awards and recognition well deserved!! NCYC Secretary Glenn is hard at work putting the weekend work schedule together. Communication is vital now! If you are an OD and have a team assembled – share the information. As members, please communicate with Glenn your preferred work weekend. Let’s communicate now to avoid any confusion so that we have ample coverage – every weekend – all season. The 2018 events schedule was included in the recent mailer along with the dues letters. Please take a look at it and mark your calendars for participation at your favorite events. Coming up is the 8th Annual Snowmobile Outing on February 2-4, the ABAY Spring Rendezvous March 9 -11, and the Blessing of the Fleet on March 11 at the Mariners' Church of Detroit. As a general note, please encourage friends interested in joining the club to contact us now. The Board prefers to conduct the interviews and hold the vote early in the year; allowing new members to be included in the annual roster, and introduced at the May general membership meeting. Over the past few weeks it seems that we are getting a small break in the weather, those single digit mornings were getting to be a little too much for me. I hope the milder weather trend continues. In less than three months our first Elite Brigade takes place April 14th. Now may be a good time to get out the 2018 calendar of events and make plans for which Elite Brigade and

Happy Valentine’s Day The 2018 First Mate membership packets have been sent out. This is our notification for both renewal and recruitment of new members. Annual dues are due by March 31st, 2018. Preparations are ongoing for the 41st Annual First Mates Fashion Show, May 6, 2018 at Barrister Gardens in St. Clair Shores. Reservations are now being accepted by Jill Romatz. Tickets are $37 and include lunch and open bar. Details are available in the flyer included in this month’s Beacon. Items are needed for raffle drawings. Chart Datum, also known as Low Water Datum, is a reference plane on each lake to which water depth and Federal navigation improvement depths on navigation charts are referred. Ô All elevations and plots shown in this bulletin are referenced to International Great Lakes Datum 1985 (IGLD 1985). IGLD 1985 has its zero base at Rimouski, Quebec near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River (approximate sea level).

Information

Recorded water levels in this bulletin are derived from a representative network of water level gages on each lake (see cover map). Providers of these data are the U.S. Department of Commerce, NOAA, National Ocean Service, and Integrated Science Data Management, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada. The Detroit District, Corps of Engineers and Environment Canada derive historic and projected lake levels under the auspices of the Coordinating Committee on Great Lakes Basic Hydraulic and Hydrologic Data. This bulletin is produced monthly as a public service. The Corps also, on a weekly basis publishes online the Great Lakes, Connecting Channels and St. Lawrence River Water Levels and Depths , which provides a forecast of depths in the connecting rivers between the Great Lakes and the International Section of the St. Lawrence River. This Monthly Bulletin of the Lake Levels for the Great Lake s may be obtained free of charge by writing to the address shown on the front cover, by calling (313) 226-6442 or emailing hhpm@usace.army.mil. Notices of change of address should include the name of the publication. This information is available on the internet at http://www.lre.usace.army.mil/Missions/GreatLakesInformation.aspx . According to preliminary estimates, basin-wide precipitation was near average for the basin as a whole during November, but Lake Michigan-Huron and Lake Ontario both received below average precipitation. Lake Erie received the most precipitation with estimates at 143% of its average November precipitation and Lake Michigan- Huron received the least rainfall at only 83% of its November average. Over the last 12 months, the total rainfall has been slightly above average for the Great Lakes basin. Net basin supply was above average for Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Lake outflows in November were above average for all lakes. All of the lakes were above their November long-term average water levels. From October to November, all of the lakes experienced a decline of about an inch, except for Lake Ontario, which remained the same. This November’s levels were 7 to 15 inches above last year’s November level. All of the lakes are below their record high levels. Lake Superior is only 4 inches below its record high November level set in 1985. The other lakes are 13 to 21 inches below their record high November levels. All of the lakes remain above their long-term averages by 12 to 21 inches. Great Lakes Basin Hydrology November 2017
