A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery

Since our last Beacon was published, I have been advised of the passing of long-time member James Hogan. This past weekend I spoke with several members who shared great memories of times with James and his family at our club. Today I spoke with his life partner/NCYC member Barbara Steffy. It was touching, Barbara sharing their memories at NCYC with family, and their club friends who truly are regarded as extended family. Keep Barbara, James’ son David, and their entire family in your thoughts and prayers during this time of loss and mourning. Currently, Barbara remains in Florida taking care of their estate matters. This month we celebrated our country’s Independence Day. It is easy to get distracted with all the fireworks and celebrating going on and lose sight of the meaning of this holiday as Christians.

Why is it important to acknowledge the significance of Independence Day in today’s world?

American liberty is a blessing from God. Because of our freedom, we can express our faith and share it with others. In many parts of the world this is not the case. The cost of following Christ is much greater for believers around the world.

Remembering this, I encourage you to not lose sight as why we celebrate Independence Day, as nation and as Christians.
