North Channel Yacht Club December 2022 Beacon
From The Flag Colleen and I would like to wish our North Channel Yacht Club (NCYC) family Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. It is difficult to believe that we are closing out another year however, we are very thankful for all the hard work and support that we received from the membership in 2022. Our activities were very well attended throughout the Summer and new people continue to get involved to help bring new ideas and enthusiasm to NCYC. The Traditions Committee worked diligently to preserve and document the heritage of our club. Several of those traditions were rejuvenated in 2022 with several more being considered for next year. Along with our traditions we have been able to welcome some new ideas and new members from out-of-state. Many of these members have become very involved in our activities and found NCYC to be the paradise that our long time members have always known. We have also welcomed a few new members with children, which brings back more kids activities and helps strengthen the foundation for the future of our club. The Flag would like to thank the Board of Directors (BOD) for their diligence and hard work during a somewhat challenging year. We accomplished much in 2022 and our plans for 2023 are huge. Thank you to those BOD’s that are finishing their terms and for all the new BODs beginning their term for the new year. Special thanks to the First Mates for all their hard work organizing meals, fundraising and supporting the needs of our club to make NCYC the best yacht club on the Great Lakes. We have been blessed with a mild weather through the middle of December and the Winters seem to be moving through very quickly in the past couple of years. Before we know it, we will be planning the Elite Brigades & Work Parties in the month of April to bring the clubhouse and grounds back to life for 2023. Vice Commodore Fringer and his wife Rachel are busy planning the 2023 Commodore’s Ball and we look forward to seeing everyone in January. They also have many exciting activities planned for the coming year.
It has been a privilege to serve as your Commodore for 2022 and to represent NCYC at the many events within the Michigan boating community. I look forward to continuing to serve as the NCYC Past Commodore’s voice to the ABYA (Anchor Bay Yachting Association). I am excited about the future of NCYC and will continue to look for ways to support our club and ensure success. Colleen and I were truly honored to represent NCYC for calendar year 2022 but, more importantly we were truly humbled by your support and friendship throughout the year. We look forward to many more years of camaraderie with our NCYC Family. Again, thank you for a great season. We hope everyone has a great Winter and we look forward to seeing you on the island in the Spring. Your Flag,
Dale Hall

CHAPLAIN NOTES DECEMBER 2022
CHAPLAIN NOTES DECEMBER 2022
As this communication was being written I received a call informing me of the unexpected passing of member Robert (Bob) Breuhan. Keep his loving wife Shirley, their children, and entire family in your prayers as they process and grieve this loss.
We are thankful for P/C Bill Hendricks successful Cardiac Bypass Surgery. Continue to pray for a full and speedy recovery.
Do keep all the families of our NCYC membership who have lost loved ones this past year and those that continue to battle chronic illness in your thoughts and prayers.
Jesus, the Hope of Christmas
The birth of a little Child, the Christian world at this season celebrates. Christmas Day is a holy and happy day when we commemorate the arrival of God’s Son into the world—the incarnation of God by way of the virgin birth.
For many people Christmas includes happy times of family, food, gifts, fellowship, celebrating and thanksgiving for the greatest gift ever given, the Lord Jesus Christ. For others, Christmas is the exact opposite. It can be a reminder of lost loved ones and a time of great loneliness. Rather than joy, many people feel overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed. The Christmas season can be a time of hopelessness and isolation. Being in Christ Jesus we have a blessed hope, knowing that even through all the suffering we endure, because of Adam’s sin and its consequences, Jesus is there with us. We are never truly alone because Christ dwells in our hearts through faith. When our time is finished here on earth we will spend eternity with the entire family of God in his presence, all because a little baby, Jesus, was born that first Christmas. God in flesh, to bear our punishment at the Cross, and conquer death by rising from the dead.
Wishing you a very blessed and Merry Christmas
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, For unto us a Son is given;
and the government shall be upon His shoulders, and His name shall be called wonderful, counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. ~
Update on our Chaplain Mark Javery Please keep Chaplain Mark Javery in your prayers. The surgeon said his hip replacement surgery went very well. Mark and Sharon are thankful and grateful for everyone's thoughts and prayers for Mark's recovery.
Member of the Month
Don and Mary Allar The NCYC Board of Directors has recognized Don and Mary Allar as Members of the Month for November 2022. When we needed extra help the jumped right in. Both worked their tails off to help us finish the carpet removal on the first floor. Without their help, I do not know if we would have gotten everything done by last weekend.
Thank you from R/C Rick and Jill Romatz
“We would like to thank our NCYC family for all the beautiful cards, text messages, and support during the passing of Jill’s Father. The best Ships are Friendships! Thank you again!

What Did We Name Our Boats in 2022? BoatUS Top 10 Boat Names List:
SPRINGFIELD, Va., Nov. 8, 2022 -- Now that recreational boating is coming to a close in much of the country, BoatUS takes a look back at the Top 10 boat names ordered this season through its online boat graphics service and provides some commentary. 1. Andiamo : Meaning “let’s go / we go / come on” in Italian, Andiamo remains in the No. 1 spot from last year’s list. It’s also a happy refrain heard from the person behind the helm as they put the throttle down and head to open waters. 2. Osprey : This year marked the premiere of Osprey, having never before made the top 10. In a unique twist, Osprey bumped last year’s No. 2 boat name, Social Distancing , completely off the list. ‘Nuff said, right? 3. Serenity: This No. 3 name is so popular it has made the top 10 seven times since 2010, tying the record with Second Wind . Yep, you guessed it – both are popular with sailboat owners. 4. Encore: Also a newcomer to the top 10 this year, Encore may be the boat name of choice for an entertainer. Or, it could indicate the “next” boat – either satisfying the 3-foot-itis or scaling down, or maybe even coming back to boat owning after a hiatus. 5. Zephyr : Last appearing on the top 10 in 2010, sailors will welcome this reference to a gentle breeze back to the list.
6. Second Wind: Is this boat named for a new chapter in life or achievement? A comeback? A new strength? We’ll never know for sure, but gosh is it perennially popular. 7. Adventure : A boat with this name is usually out of the slip every weekend putting miles of water under the keel. 8. Knot on Call: This boat name serves as a notice that on-the-water time can’t be tampered with. Of unique importance, the owner of this boat can silence their cellphone ring in just under two seconds. 9. Shenanigans: Quit fooling around. Shenanigans are a part of every boating culture. 10. Grace: In its fourth appearance on the top 10 boat names list since 2010, Grace likely holds deep meaning for vessels with beautiful lines or for those that navigate with finesse. This is the one boat in the marina that also makes docking look easy. For a look at all of the BoatUS Top 10 Boat Names lists over the years, go to BoatUS.com/BoatNames. The BoatUS Graphics service offers an online design tool that allows you to easily create custom boat graphics with fast turnaround times. BoatUS also offers simple step-by-step video instructions on how to install your new graphics yourself.
