Microsoft Word - February Cover
North Channel Yacht Club February 2023 Beacon
February Comments from The Flag: We would like to send a big thank you out to the Board of Directors, Past Commodores and members that attended the Commodore’s Ball. It was fantastic weekend starting Friday night and going to the early morning hours of Sunday. The venue, food and band were absolutely incredible. We would also like to thank everyone that help out making it a success. The Flag and Board of Directors have been working to plan the opening of NCYC for the 2023 boating season. There are several springtime projects that are already under way at NCYC. 1) Bret Kahl from Ron’s Marine will be starting the Robison seawall project late winter or early spring depending on the weather. 2) The outdoor garage and walk-in cooler project is well underway. We will begin the Elite Brigade weekends on Saturday April 15 th . The following 3 weekends (April 22 nd , April 29 th and May 6 th ) will round out the remaining weekends. These weekends will satisfy any members 4 hours of required work for opening the club. There will be many projects to keep us busy, so we encourage you to come out early and fulfill your hours. If Elite Brigade does not work for you, May 13 th &May 20 th are the official work party dates. As a reminder, Fitting Out weekend will be May 26 th thru 29 th with the First Mates Meeting and General Membership meeting on Saturday and Flag Raising Ceremony on Sunday.
We have a very important event coming up in March. It has been stipulated by our insurance company that our OD’s, Weekday Managers, Board of Director’s and the Flag take TIPS Training (Training and Intervention Procedures for Alcohol Servers). We have partnered with Huron Pointe Yacht Club to host the training class at their facility, located at 32800 S. River Rd, Harrison Twp. MI 48045 on Saturday, March 4 th , 2023 at 12:00 pm. The training will last approximately 3 hours and there will be no cost for the training. We currently have 70 seats reserved for the training and it will be based on a first come, first serve basis. Please reserve your spot by February 24 th , we need to give a final count in order to insure we have amble training materials. Please email VC/PC Rick Romatz at rromatz69@yahoo.com to reserve your seat. If you are unable to attend the training on March 4 th , we will be conducting a future training on the island (specific date TBD). We have two additional events coming up prior to the clubs opening. The Blessing of the fleet being held at the Mariners’ Church in Detroit on March 12 th at 11:00 am, which will be attended by our Past Commodore, the Flag and our Chaplain. The First Mates are having their annual Fashion Show at Barrister Gardens on April 30 th , 2023. Please send your reservations to Rachel Fringer, 48253 Golfview Drive, Macomb Township, MI 48044. The cost of the Fashion Show is $45.00. For all our members that are enjoying the winter in a southern state or for everyone vacationing, please travel safe and we look forward to an early Spring and seeing you at the Elite Brigade weekends.
Thank you to everyone in advance for your dedication and for finding ways to use your talent to better our club.

A Message from Chaplain Mark Javery
NOTES FROM CHAPLAIN MARK JAVERY
I received the unfortunate news while working on this month’s Beacon that Elizabeth Trelfa’s mother; Beth, who has been ill and had been admitted into hospice care has passed away in Florida. Keep Elizabeth, Trevor, and their entire family in your prayers at this time of loss. Pray for Robert Mann and his wife Kimber. Robert was just diagnosed with advanced stage brain cancer and has started treatments. They are taking refuge in their faith and believe in the power of your prayers. Many in our club family continue to deal with chronic conditions. Some have been mentioned here, others are unspoken. God knows and hears our prayers. Having had the last 6 weeks recovering from surgery during our winter season I have had a lot of time to think, “winter who needs it”. I am used to keeping busy and feel unproductive when I’m not doing many things at a time. Yet nature does need its winter season to rest and prepare for the next season. Then my wandering mind started thinking how physically and even spiritually we as another part of God’s creation need to rest. God gave us the sabbath, a day to keep holy but under the new covenant a day of physical rest too. In our Christian spiritual life we can experience a winter season. Use these times to reflect, pray, and listen to what God may want to tell you.
The season winter is necessary to manifest the beauty of spring. A spiritual winter can be a positive thing reminding us of God’s goodness and the importance of grace and redemption in a tiring broken world. Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV ‘To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven,” The Winter Soul The winter of the soul…is a cold and lonely season when it doesn’t understand the intention or the reason. The bitter winds that come, chills it to the marrow with each gust that blows it feels like a poison arrow. The freezing rain and sleet, seizes up its every tear they become like icicles encased with all its fear. The winter soul can’t take, the ills, the weight, the loss unless the soul is willing to keep clinging to the cross. For it is in this icy season, the soul can find warmth and nestle in the comfort of what God will bring forth. So, if the battered soul, is to survive this frosty time it must be willing to sore and over each blizzard climb. Winter in the soul…is a cold and lonely season but it can find great peace knowing God has His reason.

Commodore’s Comments
Welcome to 2023, Rachel and I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. It is truly an honor for me to be serving as your Commodore this year.
I want to thank everyone for coming to the Ball. Rachel and I hope you had a wonderful time! Thank you for all your hard work and contributions that made it a success. A special thank you to Past Commodore Dale and his lady Colleen for their tireless work serving the club and providing the great leadership that made last year great. This evening will be the start a lot of planning for a very successful 2023. We have a lot of very important decisions to make regarding policy changes as you can see from the agenda. Please remember we are all on the same team and we need to be a unified group in front of our membership. We all may not agree with all the decisions made, but we need to support each other so we don’t lose face with our membership. Also remember, what we discuss in our board meetings, stay with this group.
Please remember to make your appointment at Seiloft to get your picture taken. Time is of the essence.
I want to thank you in advance for all your hard work and dedication to the greatest club on the water.
Thank you,
Commodore Brian

Vice- Commodore’s Comment s
Happy New Year everyone. Welcome our new Board of Directors for 2023. Thank you Commodore Brian and First Lady Rachel for an Awesome Ball.
Looking at the agenda for this evening and thinking about some of the major changes that are going to be taking place right away this year. There are many policy changes that we must make plans for:
A. TIPS / MLCC Training
B. Wait list and Guest Policy and Procedures
C. MLCC Compliant
D. Insurance requirements These are a couple that are going to take some time to accomplish and I am confident looking around this table that this Board will have no problems working it out together; these are very important for us to handle before the opening of the club. And this can only be accomplished with Teamwork. Let me say we are the Governing body of the Club we need to make our decision based on the best interest of North Channel Yacht Club and the Membership. Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork!

Rear- Commodore’s Comments:
Happy New Year to everyone. Thank you, Commodore and Rachel, for an amazing start to the year with your awesome Ball. Welcome new and returning Board members. I will call this my Spring Training Report where we review basics and fundamentals to make sure this is a truly remarkable year. PURPOSE - The Club is formed to operate exclusively for the pleasure and recreation in fostering and stimulating interest in all forms of boating activity. Preserve the Club ’s historical building and grounds. Provide knowledge of boat handling and navigation, and provide members the opportunity for social relaxation and fellowship. I am not sure we talk about this enough as a Board or membership. As a Board, this is our guiding vision and marching orders for the Club. As a whole, I think we do a great job with this, and for our continued growth and success as a Club, and Board, it is important that we understand the fundamentals of how we as a team we must interact with one another to achieve that purpose. ● Trust - Not just in the traditional sense, but trusting enough to be vulnerable knowing the team will support them and allow each member to express their beliefs free of concern about how they will be received because it's being shared in the best interest of the Club in mind, free from personal goals or bias. The Board members must be confident that when they express their options it will not filter out to the general membership. ● Conflict - The entire reason for multiple Board members is to bring in as much information, and opinions as possible to facilitate the best solution possible. It is natural not to agree on everything, it is needed to have people passionately debate important issues so we can arrive at the best outcomes for the Club. ● Commitment - Commitment does NOT equal agreement. What it does mean for example if an issue passes 7-4 that the entire Board commits to that issue, 100%, no matter what. No back channeling, no I didn’t agree with that type of conversation, with the general membership. ● Accountability - If we do this we as one Board will be accountable to the membership for the Board decisions, no one will be left hung out to dry, and we will be united for the good of the Club. ● Results - If we adopt Trust, Conflict, and Commitment, the results will be a high function Board able to fulfill the purpose of the Club. I can assure the entire Flag is dedicated to this approach, I am 100% committed to it and to making this a low-drama, fun, and rewarding year for the Club. We are asking that all of you Board members to commit to this as well. Outlined are 5 guidelines for what it means to be on a high-functioning team and our Board is a team.
