Rear- Commodore’s Comments:
Happy New Year to everyone. Thank you, Commodore and Rachel, for an amazing start to the year with your awesome Ball. Welcome new and returning Board members. I will call this my Spring Training Report where we review basics and fundamentals to make sure this is a truly remarkable year. PURPOSE - The Club is formed to operate exclusively for the pleasure and recreation in fostering and stimulating interest in all forms of boating activity. Preserve the Club ’s historical building and grounds. Provide knowledge of boat handling and navigation, and provide members the opportunity for social relaxation and fellowship. I am not sure we talk about this enough as a Board or membership. As a Board, this is our guiding vision and marching orders for the Club. As a whole, I think we do a great job with this, and for our continued growth and success as a Club, and Board, it is important that we understand the fundamentals of how we as a team we must interact with one another to achieve that purpose. ● Trust - Not just in the traditional sense, but trusting enough to be vulnerable knowing the team will support them and allow each member to express their beliefs free of concern about how they will be received because it's being shared in the best interest of the Club in mind, free from personal goals or bias. The Board members must be confident that when they express their options it will not filter out to the general membership. ● Conflict - The entire reason for multiple Board members is to bring in as much information, and opinions as possible to facilitate the best solution possible. It is natural not to agree on everything, it is needed to have people passionately debate important issues so we can arrive at the best outcomes for the Club. ● Commitment - Commitment does NOT equal agreement. What it does mean for example if an issue passes 7-4 that the entire Board commits to that issue, 100%, no matter what. No back channeling, no I didn’t agree with that type of conversation, with the general membership. ● Accountability - If we do this we as one Board will be accountable to the membership for the Board decisions, no one will be left hung out to dry, and we will be united for the good of the Club. ● Results - If we adopt Trust, Conflict, and Commitment, the results will be a high function Board able to fulfill the purpose of the Club. I can assure the entire Flag is dedicated to this approach, I am 100% committed to it and to making this a low-drama, fun, and rewarding year for the Club. We are asking that all of you Board members to commit to this as well. Outlined are 5 guidelines for what it means to be on a high-functioning team and our Board is a team.
