Historical Marker

1869 – The North Channel mainland and island were very isolated. The Pointe Tremble Prairie (now called St. John’s Marsh) isolated Pearl Beach and Algonac from Fair Haven. There was a passenger service from steamer from Mt. Clemens to Pearl Beach

and Algonac. There was an abundance of game, and North Channel Shooting Club was established in 1869. The original clubhouse was partially destroyed by fire. In 1878, the clubhouse was rebuilt. The new register has the first entry on March 17, 1878. The North Channel Shooting Club was among the first, or possibly the first, club in the flats area. The first president, Marcus Stevens, was also a member of the Old Club.
