Feel assured this year-endwith free respite care at Woodport Aged Care Centre R espite care refers to short-term care given to older people, either in their own home or an aged care home. Respite care is commonly used when a regular carer needs a break or must attend to other commitments, or when someone needs extra assistance after hospital. It is also an effective way to try out living in an aged care home to see if it is the right decision for the care recipient. Woodport Aged Care Centre (Woodport) is an aged care home run by The Salvation Army Aged Care (TSAAC). It has a long history of providing respite care in Erina, as many residents start with respite with the view of shifting to permanent care. “At Woodport, we value choice, and we work with each resident to create a personalised approach to their care,” says Bronwyn Dickson, Woodport’s Care Manager. “All residents will be assessed by our Physiotherapy team on their mobility needs before our Registered Nurses gain an insight towards their meal preferences and personal care requirements.” TSAAC’s Clinical Learning Specialist, Colleen Fitz-Gerald, further explains. “We maintain residents’ dignity by working and consulting with them to ensure all personal decisions are done safely.” This is formed through discussions with each resident, their family and the Centre team. Respite residents are welcome to participate in the Centre’s programs if they wish, which include exercise classes, celebrations and recreational activities like baking and gardening. All meals are provided and freshly prepared onsite by the chef and catering team, in accordance with residents’ likes, dislikes and dietary requirements. Robert Douglas resides at Woodport and says that the Centre is, “a home away from home. You are well respected and treated like you are part of the family. I am always glad I am here. We are very well looked after both mentally and physically.” Woodport is currently offering up to 28 days of pre-booked free respite care from now until 15th January 2023. Bookings are subject to availability on the required dates and an Aged Care Assessment.
