Time to be Sun Smart! Choosing effective Sunscreen products
S un protection is still overlooked despite all the evidence of its harmful effects. Sunscreen is vital to protect from the sun’s damaging UV rays but how do we pick from a shelf full of products this summer? What does it all mean? SPF: The SPF (sun protection factor) of a sunscreen relates to the time it takes for skin to burn after you have applied it. SP30+ product filters out more than 96% of UVB while the new high protection SPF50+ products about 98% when applied correctly. It’s important that sun seekers understand that the level of sun protection doesn’t change dramatically it’s more about the testing of the product and the labelling. The high rating does not mean it has more chemicals or you can get away with applying less of it and less often. Broad Spectrum: means the product effectively protects both AVB but importantly, UVA Rays. UVB rays cause DNA damage that can lead to skin cancer. UVA rays break down collagen in the skin, causing premature ageing and wrinkles. Water Resistance: means that the sun protect and product can withstand immersion in water for up to 4 hours.
Sunscreen Hints: 1. Apply enough sunscreen to reach the SPF of the product. Generally the technique in which people apply sunscreen is lacking. They don’t apply enough sunscreen in a thick enough layer. The Cancer Council recommends adults to apply about a teaspoon to each limb, back, chest, head and neck. 2. Apply sunscreen before heading out into the sun as it takes time for sunscreen to bind strongly to the skin. Think ahead and apply at least 30 mins to 60 mins to let it soak in. 3. Reapply..put another coat on every 2 hours or more frequently if you have been swimming, exercising and sweating a lot, or if it’s really humid. Don’t forget about other sun protective clothing, hat sunglasses and to seek shade. Sunburn Tips: Drink fluids to rehydrate, cold water compresses to ease pain, pain relief tablets to lower your tempeature, over the counter soothing gels eg. aloe vera or a pain relieving spray to relieve the symptoms and to help the skin to heal. Use a good moisturizer to rehydrate your skin

Big wave surfers Local Ross Clarke-Jones and Mick Corbett are ‘Team Australia’
T he ultimate survivor of one of the world’s most dangerous sports, Aussie hell- man Ross Clarke-Jones (RCJ) is set to join forces with dare-devil WA compatriot Mick Corbett (Corbs), to compete as ‘Team Australia’ in the inaugural invitation-only Nazare Tow Surfing Challenge, which runs through to March 31, 2020. The event will take place on the awe-inspiring ‘Big Mama’ wave peak – considered to be one of the most dangerous on the planet. Clarke-Jones and Corbett are widely known as the loveable larrikins of Big Wave surfing, and have 66 years’ combined experience under their belts. Clarke Jones is one of the pioneering godfathers of the death-defying sport, while Corbett represents a new breed of surfers taking charge at some of the biggest waves in the world. W hile you cannot get rid of termites permanently from the environment, you can help prevent them from taking root in your home and control any active colonies nearby. Also known as “white- ants” these highly destructive pests, cause major structural timber damage to buildings on the Central Coast. CSIRO Survey indicates about 1 in 3 dwellings have termites within the property boundary in Australia, and most homes are at risk, particularly if well established gum trees are within 100 metres of the building. Termites forage almost at a constant bases and can spread up to 150 feet around their one colony. It doesn’t take long for termites to ‘nest’ and an infestation can take place within a time span of a mere few days. Termites are Isyourhomeatrisk from termites?

known to destroy the wall and roofing timbers of a home within 3 months of construction. Termites cause more damage to homes in Australia than fire, floods, hail storms and violent gusty winds, combined. The rate at which termites eat wood depends on many factors such as the species of termite, size of the colony, type of wood, climate, and location. Experts estimate that over a period of about five months, a group of around 60,000 termites can eat the equivalent of one foot of a 2x4 beam. Termites prefer moist, undisturbed places such as warm, dark places and are attracted to moisture, and there is usually plenty of moisture in the soil upon which your foundation is built. People who are living in homes infested by termites may suffer from allergic reactions or

Miele 10 Star TCE 630 WP Heat Pump Dryer Taking care of laundry, household budgets and the environment Representing an unprecedented level of environmental sustainability and exceptionally gentle fabric care, the Miele TCE 630 WP Heat Pump Dryer offers the very best in Miele style, quality and performance. With an 8KG capacity, the Miele TCE 630 WP boasts an exceptional 10-star energy rating that truly minimises energy consumption in the laundry. In fact, when used five times a week, the running costs for the 10 Star TCE 630 WP are only $134.89 per annum, compared with a cost of $419.02 for a Miele 2 Star TDA 150 C condenser dryer over an annual period*. This is supported by Miele EcoDry technology that delivers consistently low energy consumption as well as drying times throughout the entire life cycle of the TCE 630 WP. This technology works hand-in-hand with the tumble dryer’s powerful and economical ProfiEco motor. Maintenance-free, it is outstandingly reliable and quiet complementing the quality and longevity synonymous with the Miele brand. The Honeycomb drum of the Miele TCE 630 WP allows laundry to be dried gently and evenly and, combined with the pre-ironing feature, minimises creasing and ironing time. The 12 drying programmes optimise garment care, with programmes designed to cater to the needs of all households, from Cottons and Shirts to Delicates and Woollens. In every instance, Perfect Dry technology results in precise drying for the garments, thanks to mineral sensors which calculate residual moisture to prevent over or under drying of garments and so ensure garments are always precisely dried.
MIELE SINGLEWASH W1 WASHING MACHINES Exceptional environmental sustainability Guilt about washing only one or two small items are no longer, thanks to Miele’s SingleWash feature. The exclusive Miele SingleWash gauges water and electricity consumption as well as cycle time to meet the precise needs for when you need to wash just one or two garments instead of a full load. In fact, just enough water is introduced to the Miele honeycomb drum to saturate each fibre of the garment load. Depending on the absorbency of the fabric, this can be as little as 1 to 2 litres of water per kilogram of laundry! As a result, just half as much water and around 60% less energy is used, and there are additional time-saving benefits. In the ‘Minimum Iron 40°C’ programme, for example, the cycle lasts only 39 minutes without compromising on wash results. SingleWash is accessed on the new Miele WCE 330 washing machine as a select feature of Miele’s patented PowerWash 2.0 technology. Miele PowerWash 2.0 technology gives added consumer benefits characterised by its precise, load- dependent circulation pump and Spin&Spray technology. Available from Harvey Norman, Domayme & Good Guys stores.

ooke Medical Institute rooke Medical Institute Why Bill’s Sourdough? Sourdough starters are referred to as “ferments” or “cultures”, which are complex ecosystems composed of multiple species of yeast and lactic acid-producing bacteria, whereas ordinary baker’s yeast is a single variety of manufactured yeast that can make dough rise fast without complete fermentation. Sourdough bacteria are lactic acid-producing bacteria (lactobacilli) that are also found in numerous other fermented foods (like yoghurt). These bacteria (which need a minimum of 12 hours to ferment) produce many benefits including increasing the nutritional value of a food. They also create the wonderful unique flavours and textures of real sourdough. The pH of sourdough is around 4, where as the pH of Baker’s yeast is 5.5 to 6. Pathogenic microorganisms such as botulism, E. coli and moulds cannot reproduce in an environment with a pH below 4.6, this keeps sourdough bread mould free naturally (no artificial preservatives). Bill’s naturally leavened sourdough is easily assimilated by the body, so is often recommended by health care professionals. Sourdough c ltures contain multi le species of yeast and lactic acid- producing bacteria, which help control yeast overgrowths. Another health benefit of sourdough bread is that it has a lower glycemic index. Bill’s sourdough bread’s glycemic index is also lower Healthy living never tasted better At Bill’s, we are proud to be focused on inspiring healthier living through healthier choices. All of our delicious sourdoughs are made using pure, natural ingredients from certified organic farms. Our flour is milled using a traditional stone ground method. This method of milling avoids overheating and dehydration, thereby retaining nutrients and wheat germ. The 18 hour fermentation of our sourdough starter allows beneficial lactobacilli to fully develop, which aids digestion. Simple, Certified Organic and no nasties. Why Certified Organic? Because we believe it is absolutely essential when creating our highly nutritious and tasty sourdoughs. When you purchase certified organic produce you can be guaranteed (through strict external and regular auditing by Australian Certified Organic from farm to plate) that what you’re eating is free from harmful fertilisers and chemicals as well as promoting ethical farming practices.

Why you should ditch social norms By Guy Thornycroft
Of course, every floor option has its pros and cons and your specific lifestyle, location and application needs to be taken into consideration. Beachfront properties, big active families, inside pets or holiday homes indicate a quality laminate is suitable. More sedate lifestyles, further from the beach and the absence of house pets make Oak and traditional timbers a reasonable option to consider. They have tough varnish surfaces and have the added advantage of being able to be re varnished in later years to rejuvenate them. Drop into the show room and talk to our knowledgeable flooring experts about your ideas. (258 West St, Umina Beach)
The Central Coast is famous for its wonderful beaches. But sand is the enemy number 1 of varnished floors. This makes laminate flooring a practical, cost effective and low maintenance option. Laminate is the most scratch resistant of all floors, meaning it will look new and fresh for far longer than varnished surfaces. The good news is that modern laminates overcome all the traditional fears. How? a. Modern laminates can be waterproof b. Technology has enabled a high degree of authenticity for colour and texture c. They are far harder to damage d. Come in a wide selection of plank sizes and have a lower repeat rate than in the past
Many people pick their new flooring based on what they imagine a prospective buyer will value in the future rather than what they would like now. For example, in more expensive suburbs there is an expectation the floor should be real timber rather than laminate, regardless of quality. Even though many are now unable to tell the difference by touch or sight or that the owners have no immediate plan to sell, there is a fear of devaluing the property. The missing consideration is the value of: a. Waking up and liking the look and feel of your floor. b. The time and effort cost of keeping it clean and looking good. c. The visible wear and tear on the floor in 15 plus years when you might be selling.
