A SMALL SPACE GOES A LONG WAY
Women and children are at the heart of everything Women’s Community Shelters do. The extraordinary Shelter Managers, Case Workers, Shelter Boards and local communities walk alongside them every step of the way towards a life free from violence and homelessness.
T hey have been working doubly hard these last few months. The Covid-19 restrictions have resulted in many changes not only within their shelters but also the network HUB. With the loss of volunteer availability and all of their team working from home, they have been limited with the acceptance of in-kind donations for the greater Sydney community. Donations of quilts, linens, toiletries and more were building up in Hornsby local, Sallianne McClelland’s carport. Sallianne (pictured above) is the Director of Development for Women’s Community Shelters. In despera- tion she reached out to our Team at Kennards for support. Knowing that
donations would continue not only for the shelters but also for the end of year major fundraiser, Sallianne knew she needed to find a solution and to find it fast. “When I sent an email to Sharon Munro, I had all fingers and toes crossed hoping that Kennards Storage could help me with a solution. That same day, I received confirmation that a space was available for our use for the next six months. The relief was immense. Knowing I can continue to accept donations for our shelters and our end of year fundraiser while we are all still working remotely is a game changer and I am grateful for the support."
Shelters has helped seven different communities establish and operate emergency crisis shelters to provide more desperately needed support for vulnerable women and children across NSW. "Last year, we assisted over 370 women and children escaping homelessness or domestic and family violence and provided an additional 20,211 extra bed nights to the sector. We achieve these results because of the support we receive from our communities and local businesses. Thanks to Kennards Self Storage, we can collect donations with confidence as we move through the unchartered waters of 2020.”
