More than a Game
Golf is more than a game at Greystone—it’s a lifestyle. We take our passion for it seriously–in a fun way. Each round is a chance to connect with friends and make memories to cherish. With two pristine championship courses, Founders and Legacy, our Members enjoy the unique luxury of getting to pick between two gems every time they play. Along with both courses, Members also enjoy full access to the state-of-the-art Greystone Golf Performance Center and the world-class instruction offered there through the Blackburn Golf Academy. Mark was recently named the PGA National Teacher and Coach of the Year and that’s why six PGA Touring Professionals currently call Greystone home. If you live for golf, there is no better place for you to call home, too. As a Member-Owned Club, Members are deeply invested in the long-term success of Greystone and that is evident in ev erything from the course conditions to the excep tional country club amenities. And unlike many golf clubs that close their courses on Mondays for maintenance, Members can play golf at Greystone 7 days a week. This guide covers both the Legacy and Founders Courses, will take you inside the Golf Performance Center, and introduce you to the Greystone staff and PGA Pros dedicated to making this one of the best destinations for golf in all of Alabama. Welcome!
“The Founders Course at Greystone is a gem, and the Legacy Course might be even better. The Club is first-rate with everything they do….Play at Greystone when you are invited. You won’t be disappointed.” –Wayland Abernathy, III
Built for Champions
FOUNDERS COURSE Playing golf on the Founders Course is nothing short of majestic. Designed by Bob Cupp in 1991, the course draws some of the world’s best golfers each spring for the nationally televised Regions Tradition, one of the major championships on the PGA Tour Champions circuit. You will enjoy magnificent scenery during your rounds as you crisscross babbling brooks on tree-lined fairways, winding your way through the Appalachian Mountain foothills. Natural beauty and wonder surround you. Bermuda-grass fairways with Champions Bermuda greens, and five sets of tees, provide a welcomed combination of playing surfaces and challenging options. Playing 7,299 yards from the back tees (with five par 5s, five par 3s, and eight par 4s) each round includes plenty of variety.
JON GIBBONS, PGA Head Golf Pro for Founders Course
Jonathan grew up not far from Greystone and has been playing golf since he was 10. He has been heavily involved in growing Juniors Programs and is a Certified Club Fitter for Titleist. Jon has been with Greystone since 2015 and is a great re source for ensuring you have the right gear to fit your game.
“There are some key holes that you have to play well out here and then there’s some holes you have to take advantage of…It’s a special spot here in Birmingham and I always enjoy coming here (to Founders).” –Steve Stricker, PGA Regions Tradition Champion 2019 and 2022
Founders Signature Holes HOLE #3 Par 4 453 Yards
The most challenging hole on Founders will require avoiding a creek, a lake, and bunkers that frame the back of the green. Play the left side of the fairway to avoid trouble. As you cross the stone bridge, think hard about the right club for your approach to avoid the creek and the lake it feeds.
HOLE #14 Par 3 197 Yards
Greystone’s signature hole is this serene par 3 that slopes down ever so slightly from the tee box. You can use the slant on the left side of the green to feed a well placed tee shot back to the middle and give your self an opportunity for birdie.
HOLE #15 Par 5 609 Yards
Your distance will be tested and accuracy rewarded on the 15th. Steer clear of the creek running along the left of the fairway. Opt for short of the green as you ponder your approach, because all the other angles create much more challenging shots.
HOLE #18 Par 5 526 Yards
This beautiful amphitheater-style hole requires three solid shots for success. The creek will crisscross your path as you approach the small green. Play the center for safety, because putts above the hole roll very fast. Make sure to enjoy the picturesque waterfall as you finish off your round.
A Hidden Gem
LEGACY COURSE The Legacy Course, carved into the valley of Double Oak Mountain, is your secluded golf sanctuary inside the gates of Greystone and lo cated just three miles northeast of the Founders Course. It opened in 2000 and features plac id lakes, rolling hills, and wandering streams. Legendary course architect Rees Jones designed Legacy and his unique touches abound, especially in the prominent bunker features. The course was renovated with new greens, tees, and bunkers in late 2022. The Legacy Clubhouse was also expanded and offers a great setting for post-round drinks or dinner inside the Clubhouse in our new fine dining restaurant, Aqua. Both over look the waterfalls and the picturesque mountain side view of Double Oak Mountain. The course is an approachable, but stern, test playing at 7,151 yards from the furthest of the five tee boxes. It has a 74.7 course rating and 146 slope rating. However, the wide, zoysia-grass fairways make Legacy playable for all skill levels. From your first drive on the opening par 4 to your final putt on the expansive 18th hole, play ing Legacy you will feel as if you’ve found a spe cial place that you want to return to as often as possible.
“There are lots of different skill levels that can succeed at Greystone. You can just change the tees you play and it can make a really big difference.” –Stefanie DelGreco
Legacy Signature Holes HOLE #2 Par 3 186 Yards
Don’t get wet and you can give yourself a shot for birdie on this picturesque water hole. There is space be hind the green if you are too strong off the tee, but the downhill chip towards the water can be a tricky shot to pull off.
HOLE #9 Par 4 455 Yards
Statistically the toughest hole on Legacy, the 9th requires a solid drive to the left center of the fairway. Cross the quaint bridge and eye up your approach shot. Watch for the bunkers that flank the large green and the swale on the left side.
HOLE #14 Par 4 451 Yards
Your downhill drive must steer clear of the bunkers that flank the fairway. The next challenge is avoiding the water on the right as you approach this long, narrow undulating green. If the flag is in the back right this hole can be particularly challenging.
HOLE #18 Par 5 543 Yards
The perfect end to a round requires two long shots to be successful on this dog leg to the right. The green is a bit smaller and closely guarded by water on the right and a bunker on the left. Play conservatively or take your shot and try to reach that green in two.
