CROQUET QUIPS

HELENE & GEOFF ROGERS This months profile features a couple that have made a gallant return to this wonderful game, having been a part of the original team way back when, just as another of our great stalwarts, Jim Puckeridge has done, but more on him later.

Geoff was born in Longreach QLD (nice and warm this time of year) in 1936 and he's lived an eventful life, serving first in the army briefly, before transferring to the RAAF. During this time he saw service in Malaysia, and Vietnam (2 postings) working in refrigeration, also as a chopper crewman. He was discharged in 1978. (sure beats the hell out of my little stint in the "Nasho's”) Not one to stand idle for too long, he joined the NSW Ambulance Service as a rescue officer, and Control Room Co-ordinator for 17 years. Still not ready to put his feet up, he joined the SES for a short time. (There's no truth in the rumour that Geoff was the driver of the truck that made waves during our flood event last year) Meanwhile Helene was born in Stanmore Sydney in 1938, and at 17 she commenced her nursing career at Concord Repatriation Hospital under a very strict regime of ex army sisters, along with a Matron who ruled with an iron fist, but all that discipline put Helene on the right track to forge a career in nursing, including screening, and immunisation against Tuberculosis for South East Asian refugees. This work was carried out at Liverpool Hospital. Helene also worked for the Drug, and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in Wollongong. The type of people she had to deal with on a daily basis would have no doubt put her under a great deal of stress.

Helene,& Geoff were married in 1977,(that's 40 years come October) They loved to travel and saw quite a lot of this beautiful country. It's possible that while on these trips, Helene became quite an accomplished game fisher (person?) and so, after living in Kiama for some time, they made the move to Jettys, where they have made many friends in a relaxed environment. they enjoy the lifestyle so much that apart from an upcoming cruise, they have no desire to travel, preferring instead to sit back, relax, and spoil their ever expanding family of grand,& great grand kids.

Well done guys Col. B.
