BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS: The city has four active boards and commissions that advise and assist the City Council in setting policy: » » Bicycle Advisory Committee: The Bicycle Advisory Committee promoted active living and provide safe and accessible routes to cyclists in the community. The committee is responsible for promoting commuter and recreational bicycling, advocating for bicycling infrastructure improvements, encouraging safe riding through education and involving residents to become interested in bicycling issues throughout the city. » » Park & Recreation Advisory Board: The Park & Recreation Advisory Board makes recommendations to the City Council on policies, programs and development actions related to park and recreation services. » » Planning Commission / Board of Adjustments & Appeals: The Planning Commission assists the City Council in reviewing and analyzing development proposals and in enforcing the city’s zoning and subdivision ordinances. Commission members also act as the Board of Adjustment and Appeals (BOAA). The Planning Commission reviews rezoning, platting, the relocation of dwellings; and when acting as the BOAA reviews zoning, conditional use permits and sign variances. The City Council makes final decisions concerning rezoning and platting applications and considers appeals of Planning Commission decisions. » » Police Civil Service Commission: The Police Civil Service

civil service examinations for the department, makes recommendations to the City Council concerning appointments and promotions and handles disciplinary matters within the police force. The City Council also appoints members to the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission (SPUC), which oversees the operation of the publicly owned water and electric utilities. It is composed of five members who serve three-year terms. ADMINISTRATION Appointed by the City Council, the city administrator serves as the chief administrative officer in the City of Shakopee. The Administrator is responsible for day-to-day oversight of city operations, providing direction for all city departments regarding the policies and goals established by the Council, handling citizen inquiries and acting as liaison to the mayor and City Council. The Department of Administration supports the city’s core services and acts as a liaison for the City Council.
