HISTORIC GROWTH Since 1970, Shakopee has grown from a rural community of less than 8,000 people to a city of more than 40,000. Population growth accelerated in the mid-1990s following increased regional access provided by the construction of the Bloomington Ferry Bridge across the Minnesota River and the US Highway 169 bypass. DEMOGRAPHICS SHAKOPEE TODAY RESIDENTS: POPULATION TRENDS SINCE 2001, SHAKOPEE HAS TRANSFORMED FROM A LARGELY RURAL COMMUNITY OF 7,700 TO A CITY OF 40,000 DRIVEN BY NEW FAMILIES THAT WORK OUTSIDE OF THE CITY.

RESIDENTS: EDUCATION SHAKOPEE, MUCH LIKE THE REGION, IS WELL EDUCATED, WITH 66% OF THE POPULATION HAVING ATTENDED AT LEAST SOME COLLEGE. EDUCATION ATTAINMENT Educational attainment in Shakopee is similar to that in Scott County and the region. Shakopee residents are well-educated, with 66% of the population having attended college. Graduate and professional degrees are less common in Shakopee than the region as whole.
