Spring/Summer 2018 Hometown Messenger & Activities Brochure

Greetings, Shakopee! Normally, winter in Minnesota is when life seems to slow down, when we can take a moment and catch our breath. But here in Shakopee, nothing has been slowing down. This winter has been full of important discussions about future growth and development. We’ve had a steady stream of developers and businesses express interest in making a home in Shakopee. Check out the story on page 9 about some current projects happening in west Shakopee. I expect we'll see this area continue to boom in the coming year. One of the most visible projects you may have heard about is MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

the proposed Canterbury Commons development near Canterbury Park. This $400 million, multi-use development has the potential to change the Canterbury landscape by developing currently under- utilized land into a variety of residential, retail, commercial and recreational uses. For example, Doran Cos. has proposed building a 600-plus-unit luxury apartment complex – something our community currently does not offer. I expect to see more of Canterbury Park’s plans in the coming months and am interested in hearing the community’s thoughts as we proceed. The city – staff, leadership and council – has been listening to the

community a lot in recent months as part of the Envision Shakopee process. I want to thank all the residents, business owners and stakeholders with an interest in our community who have shared your ideas with us. Your input (see page 8) will help shape the 2040 Comprehensive Plan and lay out a vision for how Shakopee will grow in the coming decades. Keep talking! We want to hear what you have to say. Lastly, I want to give kudos to our city staff and their continued focus on improving customer service. City Administrator Bill Reynolds recently led a customer service training for all front- line staff that aims to provide our employees with the training they need to handle a variety of situations. Customer service is a big focus of our City Council and leadership team; we’re here to serve you. I hope you enjoy this edition of the Hometown Messenger and find a lot of useful information as we all look ahead to spring.
