things you've told us about Shakopee's future

6. Strongly agree a post-secondary institution is needed; however, it should have a child care component so parents, especially single parents, can go to school. 7. The 169 corridor seems the ideal place for mixed use because businesses and residents like being close to transit. People that want to be close to transit also want to be close to stores. People that don't want to be near either are already in the more rural areas. 8. Housing for employees is needed. With staffing being a major issue for most companies in our area it would be nice to have a larger pool of potential employees to pull from. 9. I don't want to lose downtown's character or make traffic and parking more of a nightmare than it already is. If employment in/near downtownmeans more things to do and amenities in keeping with the current character, then sure.

Over the last eight months, hundreds of community members have shared their ideas, priorities and dreams for Shakopee. Below is a small slice of the wide- range of comments we've received from the community. City staff and our consultants continue to compile comments, which will be used to craft the plan’s recommendations and priorities. 1. Make the 101 corridor into downtown more lively and centered on young family entertainment, needs/ shopping, and safe[ty]. 2. Take advantage of the amazing open spaces in the community and fill in areas that are already dense with a variety of tighter housing. 3. Roundabouts are safer and faster than four-way stops, and cheaper than signals. "

Community members discuss jobs, housing, transportation and park options at the January Envision Shakopee workshop.

12. Need another river crossing or expand lanes on existing crossings. 13. Small lot, trailer park, tiny house and employee housing by business on their land should all be options, but not at taxpayers’ expense. 14. I think downtown is important for Shakopee's success in attracting future young families and businesses. It is a unique aspect that can set the city apart from neighboring south metro suburbs. The trend is eating and shopping local and what better way to capitalize than a thriving local "downtown." 15. There should be more frequent public transportation . It would make sense to have a train running because of the number of people living here. 16. The riverfront and state trail is way underutilized/underpromoted. 17. Don't need any more townhouses . 18. More townhomes! They provide more room than an apartment but less maintenance than a single-family home. 19. Organic growth makes sense. No support for more government tax abatements or TIF financing. 20. Our parks should accommodate people with special needs . 21. It’s too dangerous to let kids bike or walk to school , but I would let them if it were safer. It’d be healthy for them too. Stay informed by signing up for updates at www.envisionshakopee.com.

COMPREHENSIVE PLAN: A TOOLBOX FOR THE FUTURE A comp plan serves as a toolbox for future planning. The Envision Shakopee process asks community members to decide which tools belong in our toolbox. For example, some strategies require no monetary support but rather address outdated regulations or policies that more closely align with supporting the free market and use of land. The comp plan identifies strategies in the following areas: policy, projects, programs, communications, internal operations, education, incentives and budget.

"

4. The upkeep of facilities and older sites is a must. Simply stated, these sites make Shakopee look bad if they are in shambles. 5. Without a strong school system you have a weak town.

10. Safe pedestrian crossings is an issue that needs attention. Drivers are extremely inattentive to pedestrians. 11. Downtown is dead. Let it die. When values plummet investors will come in and redevelop .
