SmartLink Transit Dial-A-Ride serves Scott and Carver counties Did you know SmartLink buses are available for anyone to ride? Anyone who lives in Shakopee can call to schedule a ride. Keep in mind the buses are not a taxi service but rather a reservation-based bus service available for anyone who may not have access to a vehicle or a reliable ride to his or her destination. Generally, reservations are booked two to seven days in advance and the service includes door-to-door pick up and drop off. Shakopee's west end is in the spotlight After years of waiting, Shakopee’s west side is starting to see growth – and it's not likely to stop for some time. Last summer, construction began on Windermere, a mixed-use development west of Marystown Road and south of Highway 169. Developers are planning to build 197 single-family and townhouse units along newly extended 17th Avenue. In February, the council approvedWindermere's 2nd Addition, which includes 27 single-family lots. The city also recently received an application for a new child care facility, New Horizon Academy. The city anticipates several more projects will be submitted over the next six months to fill in the commercial and residential areas of that portion of the development. 101

CURRENT WEST END DEVELOPMENT

Just east of Marystown Road, Randy Kubes is also planning to build approximately 20 single- family homes on 10 acres south of Danube Avenue. Further north, construction is ongoing at Ladybug Daycare next to Jackson Elementary. The area south of Shakopee Town Square will also see changes this year, as the city permanently extends Vierling Drive. This extension will allow the city to begin developing approximately 30 acres that lie just north of Highway 169. 41

Two projects have already received approval to move into the area. Doggie Doo's Spa & Retreat will be constructing a 10,000-square-foot grooming, day care and boarding facility along Highway 69 and Five Stars Recovery Center will be developing a residential treatment center. Director of Planning and Development Michael Kerski said the city has received interest in several other lots, including a market-rate apartment complex and possible new employment centers. WEST END GROWTH Shakopee's west end has been the focus of much planning in recent years. In 2016, the city completed a West End Land Use Master Planning Study of 323 acres. The 2040 Comprehensive Plan process, Envision Shakopee, is also developing a larger master plan for the area that could include significant employment centers. Last year, the city updated its orderly annexation agreement with Jackson Township, laying out the city's future stages of annexation to ensure the proper expansion of city utilities and infrastructure. The city may now annex up to 250 acres per year. City leaders believe the new interchange scheduled for construction this year at Highway 169/Minnesota Highway 41/County Highway 78 will pave the way for continued west end growth in the coming years. "We have had a lot of interest in the development potential for west Shakopee," Kerski said. "And there's nothing that leads us to believe it will slow down any time soon." 78
