SHAKOPEE ICE ARENA

LEARN TO SKATE Ice skating is a great way to have fun, stay fit and make new friends. The Learn to Skate Program offers skill progressions designed to enhance the capabilities of each skater. Shakopee offers basic skating instruction through advanced figure skating beginning at age 3 through adults. Classes meet once per week for 30 minutes. Class placement is determined by skill level and age. • Shakopee Parks and Recreation reserves the right to move children to the appropriate level if they are not registered in the correct level. • Protective headgear is recommended for all children under the age of 6 and must be provided by the participant. • Class attire: Skaters should wear warm, comfortable clothing. We suggest dressing in layers so jackets or sweaters may be removed as the skaters warm up. Mittens or gloves are a must! No tight jeans; they restrict movement. • Please make sure that your skate blades are sharp and your boots fit properly. Skates should be sharpened before first class. • Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled class. • Classes may be combined or canceled if class minimums are not met.

Necessary equipment: hockey skates, certified hockey helmet (ice approved) and hockey gloves (optional). Skaters will learn all the elements without a hockey stick. Free Skate This is the point where the skater can choose whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating. Adult Primary focus is to develop forward and backward skating, gliding, stopping and introduce crossovers.

Levels are designed to help the preschool-age skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. Helmets are highly recommended for all beginners (bicycle helmets acceptable).
