TE16 Turkish Delight
Nalan Barbarosoğlu right? You have to. I should’ve used present tense there. Well, I surely don’t need anyone else, to confuse myself. The fedora man was looking so… beaten on the bench, I sympathized with him. “You and the young Jew, were you two close?” “I’m sorry for your loss,” I said, but immediately after I regretted saying it. Should it have been something else, like “may he rest in peace”? My god I knew so little about them. Why hadn’t I asked the young Jewwhile he lived… I can’t say that we’d had the time to converse, to get to know each other either. We were writing stories at any given time, transferring over the good ones and copying them… And if that wasn’t enough, we had to deal with the station chief and his constant bad mood. Could I console him with a tap on the shoulder? The fedora guy coughed twice, which freaked me out and I hit him on his back, thinking it would help. His eyes had teared, was it because of the coughs or his sorrow, I couldn’t tell. I should have bought some ayran for him to drink too. How could I forget that? He thanked me with his head and loosened his tie. He explained that he had coughed because he hadn’t taken his pills. It was stupid of me to not have him wait inside the waiting lounge. I put my story 106 “We grew up together, on the same street.”
