Koma said his mother had been diagnosed with skin cancer and that he had to take her to the hospital for some tests. Jannick’s face contorted. He brought down his right hand on Koma’s left shoulder. He said he was really sorry. The sentiment that traveled out of his right hand into the left shoulder in front of himwas sincere. But Koma was sorrier and more sincere, since his mother was actually healthy enough to run a marathon. He left the building and walked up the main street. The Kastanienallee slopes delicately. With a modulated gait it puts absolutely no burden on the calves. While it has no tolerance for heavy-handedness and impatience, still it allows for a lungful of smoke every three steps. And Koma obeyed all the rules of the street as he strode along with an unfiltered Camel between his fingers. He knew he was being followed. He knew his life was about to turn upside down. But he didn’t speed up, didn’t run, didn’t flee. Exactly nine breaths and twenty seven steps later,
