Haydar Ergulen Borrowed Like Sorrow

Once poetry was like my dog able to sense my sadness and so take its place at my side

Now my poetry’s an old hound grown deaf, its heart deadened

*

I was so wounded back then only an animal could’ve felt for me

If I’ve learned anything from animals it’s that I know nothing at all about humans

And so I saw: each human needs an animal

*

Some pick their words off of trees some grind their poetry from stone their love from the desert…
