EMMA : shall we take a look at some slides

MAX : emma only knew her uncles aunts and cousins from germany from photo slides on sundays every so often edgar would project a slideshow onto the dining-room wall they sometimes received letters or picture postcards from them and her parents would get emma to write back it seemed weird to write to someone she had never seen in real life after a while uncle rainer started to send parcels in one of them emma received a light blue square-shaped school satchel for her very first day at school school was fine though odd things would happen from time to time half of the benches in the classroom would remain empty from time to time some of emma’s colleagues would disappear and never return again

as if they had been swallowed up by an invisible hole as if someone had erased them with a giant eraser in fact the colleagues who disappeared overnight all went to germany the children would often talk about this
