two expressions, this composite face had four. And so forth. The expressions weren’t combined, they were collected. This lent the traits a phenomenal complexity. It was a fascinating face. It seemed about to emerge from the cover. At the end of the broadcast, Jenna Fortuni and Joanna Fortaggi returned home troubled and shaken. They had tried to behave normally. Their husbands did not greet them with the usual questions. Each of their husbands had seen the show and each had been unsettled by the face that had been shown. They were afraid they might not recognize their wives. Jenna and Joanna had wanted equally urgently to be alone so they could examine their fourth and seventh book in peace. And to their husband’s anxious questions about their state of mind, both replied that everything was fine. It was all under control. They didn’t want to go into any details—otherwise they would have had to decide whether they were furious, incensed, exhilarated, excited, dismayed, resigned, horrified or worried. For the time being, they had better things to do. Both needed to examine their new work closely. Joanna Fortaggi told her family that she was going to take a bath. She retreated with bathrobe and book. The key turned four times in the lock of the bathroom door. For her part, Jenna Fortuni simply closed the door of her office. Her husband left her in peace.
